I get what you mean with the simplicity. Does having cabinets on one side only with frames on the other side look ok or strange?

I really like what you came up with. But I also don't like TVs over fireplaces. How about the TV on the right? On the left could be a comfortable chair and a cool modern floor lamp.

I really like this redesign, asymmetrical and all. Unrelated, what free software did you use for this? Looks neat.

We used Floorplanner! I was planning on getting the mounting brackets to be able to pull tv down. According to my husband, he prefers not to watch tv from an angle. Ok you all are making me feel better about the asymmetry! I just need to figure out if I want marble, wood, blue walls...

Where your fireplace is now. maybe consider having the chimney pipe modified to be moved forward a bit. This is a three sided fireplace. usually they run on propane. the second one shown here can be a wood burning version.

. a central column like this gives room for a expansive mantle/bookshelves..I would personally accent this piece with mirror or mirror tiles on the wall so when the fire is on that its reflected across the whole wall. Big statement type of element presentation.

Your furniture is not going to be symmetrical in the room, so the off center fireplace will look good. I like what you have in mind.

I like your plan but I think the tv needs to be to the right as others have pointed out.

I am not a fan of over the fireplace tv's. Take a look at how Studio McGee remodeled this off center fireplace with a tv to the side.

They made the fireplace look more important and a focal point by building out a hearth and beefing up the surround which can make the off center look less noticeable.

Thanks all! I understand the issue with the tv but it’s one decision (of many we have to make in this remodel) I let go to my husband who insists the TV is the focal point of the room 🤣 and would rather demolish the fireplace than move the TV. What are your thoughts on marble bottom and wood paneling for the top? Too busy? Should I do the accent blue wall or keep all the walls same color?

I like your mockup very much as it is. I'm also not a great fan of TVs over the fireplace, but there are always exceptions and I think this is one of them. Blue accent wall both sides,, definitely, and nix the wood. The wall has graphic strength as you have it. I think adding wood would simply create a bit of muddle.

If you want more materials, you’ll need to simplify what you have. For example, instead of a short plant, get a taller one and put it on a stand and remove the art above. Then instead of shelving, do a large artwork piece. This will simplify things enough to introduce marble (I’m not sure where you want to add it though?? - behind tv/fireplace would be nice). I also think you could add brass trim (in the fireplace marble - it’s called Schluter trim) and hardware. Anyways, if you go with your original design, I think brass shelving could be really unique paired with brass cabinet hardware...but no marble with original design! Also, if you're going to have the TV above the fireplace, maybe you could use a pull-down tv mount so it can be viewed at appropriate height. Also, switch the hardware on the cabinets to the side I've shown in below photo (should be next to each other). In my photo I've shown marble on tv wall and countertop, brass pieces on fireplace wall and brass hardware and a tiny bit of brass in the photo frame. This is how I think you can get away with adding in more materials. Otherwise it'll be too busy w marble AND shelving

The more I look at my rendering above, the more I think a non rectangular/square piece of art would look good. Something like a bunch of circular pieces just to take a break from large rectangular pieces (tv and fireplace). If you’re interested, I could make a quick mock up

Rather than aiming for bilateral symmetry, you should consider balance. I would have shelving/built-in units on the left side of the fireplace as well as on the right, to balance off the entire composition.

As far as materials go, I'd use stone (or other fireproof materials) for the fireplace surround and hearth, and wood for all the cabinetry, mantel and moldings. Or stone on the entire space surrounding the TV and firebox, and wood for the cabinets and shelves, but in any case no more than two different materials.

I love your first inspiration photo with shelves on both sides, colors are beautiful too. The tv over the fireplace will work as long as you sit far enough away so you are not lookin up so much and straining your neck. The furniture arrangement in the inspiration photo is perfect for this! I hope you post your “after”. I’d love to see the final result! Good luck!

Thanks J D for all the options! Love the brass idea and that’s actually what we’re doing for the kitchen hardware so would work nicely to incorporate.

Thanks all for comment on simplifying the materials. Agree on no more than two. I’m thinking marble for fireplace/tv and will consult my contractor on the cabinets, especially on cost of building it in custom... the project will take until end of year with the rest of the home so I’ll share pics when it’s done but it’ll be a while!

Without room dimensions, it's hard to know but seeing the sliding doors on the left wall, I'm wondering if the fireplace wall is the best spot for the TV? Here's a TV viewing distance calculator which might help with your floor plan. Also, you say that you'll never use the fireplace. If removing it won't affect resale value and is in the budget, perhaps removing it IS something to consider.

I like the blue accent; the shelving; and I personally am good either way on the left shelving or not.

And your diagram, it looked like you had taken out the hearth of the fireplace. Even if you never use the fireplace, it has to be legal and in working order for resale unless you take it out.

But have you considered temporarily closing it off, and put the TV at the proper height? as if that wall is just a pillar of (insert your material here: marble stone shiplap). Plants below, possibly?

OR ... Consider barn doors to cover TV?

And if you did have a column, what would one do above a TV?

You are spot on with your rendering and your inspiration photos. It's great that you are removing the closet. That was an odd place to have it anyway but it does give you more room. As for the tv, I've installed mine above the fireplace in two different houses and have never had a problem with either one. No neck strain at all.

Like your concept. Agree asymmetry is fine. Would consider going dark with the fireplace/above fireplace area so the TV blends in more.

If TV is on a pull-down mechanism, you can't enjoy they fire while watching TV. Put it on the right on a fully articulated arm so it can be tweaked to hubby's satisfaction.
