I believe the problem is you change from a black pick up to a White pick up truck.

Seriously: Last fall we had at least a half inch of rain about every 5 to 8 days. I had over seeded my yard and it looked great. This year we have had less that an inch in the last two months, and the grass all died.

While I can give you no suggestions, I do understand the disappointment of losing the grass.

My hope is the with the cooler temperatures, what I thought was dead was really dormant and it will all come back, and grow stronger through the winter months. (20 mile east of Raleigh NC)

We are on pace to have the wettest year on record for the third year in a row (over 60" in all three years) so I doubt it is lack of water. Further, a direct neighbor seeded with fescue about a year after me and his lawn held up much better with no supplemental watering (i did start watering again in august when it started turning the corner into looking really crappy). This will be the second winter since seeding.

Do you get grasshoppers? they will wipe out a lawn

Yes! I have seen a bunch of grasshoppers this year and not noticed any previously. Not sure why they wouldn't have hammered my neighbors as bad, but excellent avenue to investigate--thank you!
