Thank you so much for this information bengz6westmd. I just looked it up and it is on Canada;s Invasive Plant list. I should have known because it grew so well, little care, and it has shot up to about 5 feet. Chop, chop!! Thanks again.

that was my first thought also ... and i presume some bird perched on that fence and dropped a pre fertilized pellet

get it out of there ... they can get huge... they are trees ...

whether you keep it... is a function of how large your yard is.. how many acres ... and whether you want the mess associated with falling fruit fermenting and rotting on the ground in fall ... i presume thats whats happening out under mine.. since ive had a spate of birds flying into window in last last few weeks ... dude.. its a 2 story house.. and it didnt jump in front of you.. try to miss it next time ... if your neck is still intact ...

also.. the pretty purple stains on your siding.. and car ...

they also attract other vermin .. raccoons.. groundhogs... etc...

Thanks for the information following the first identification. I went right out and chopped it down because it is not in a favourable position - on the edge of my front patio. Ken-adrian, I remember you from years past on the GardenWeb, and as usual, you provided all the reasons why this beautiful specimen had to go. And yes, it probably was a bird as they are wont to perch on the nearby fence and leave their droppings. So whether it is the white or the red (and I do believe it is the white), it had to go. No guilt!!

Chopping is probably not enough. It may well sprout from the stump. You need to dig out the roots or herbicide the stump.
