trash and dishwasher placement

last modified: 5 years ago

My new build is going to have a large workstation-style sink. A kitchen designer suggested I put the dishwasher to the left of the sink, with the trash under the left hand side of the sink. I am right handed. This does not seem like a good idea to me, since the trash will be in the way of the dishwasher when it is open (e.g., after scraping into the trash). Further, since the drain is on the RHS of the sink, that's where I'd be pre-rinsing dishes (if needed) which would then require moving the dripping item all the way across the sink to the dishwasher. Further, I assume my accessories will be best used on the LHS of the sink, so I'd be dropping over those if I move the rinsed item over the sink. Am I thinking about this the correct way? Where would you place the trash and dishwasher relative to the sink?

Sounds logical to me. With the trash pulled (partially?) open and the dishwasher door down, I would think you'd stand behind the trash container, scrape stuff into that container, and then put the dish on a rack. Standing at the sink with the trash pushed in, I'd think you'd scrape a dish into the sink and then put it on a rack. It doesn't matter where the sink drain is; you'd just shove everything into that drain when you were done scraping. I don't know what "accessories" there are or why you'd "be dropping over those".

I’m left handed and still prefer dishwasher on right because disposal is in right sink to scrape/ rinse into before loading in dishwasher. My small trash under left sink.

That would bug me to have the trash between me and the dishwasher while standing at the sink. Totally not functional. My trash is in the island underneath and slightly to the right of my prep space so I can scrape into the trash as I prep. It's close enough to, but not right next to the dishwasher so people can scrape into trash before placing dish in sink or loading in dishwasher. Totally functional for us. Can you post the overall layout of your kitchen?

@wdccruise I hadn't thought of standing in front of the trash. I am not sure that would work well for me personally, but I can see how it would for many people. As for scraping into the sink (which I don't normally do anyways), I'd rather scrape right into the disposal instead of into a random part of the sink and then move the stuff in the sink 50+ inches to get it to the disposal. As for the accessories, I am looking at a workstation sink, where I'll have a drying rack, cutting board, etc. If those are on the left, and I'm scraping directly into the drain on the RHS, then I'd be moving the dishes over those accessories. Of course, if I slide the accessories to the right a bit and scrape into a random sink location as you proposed, I wouldn't have this problem.

@AJCN Your layout sounds nice. You can see my kitchen design thread here -- any comments are welcomed! Obviously, don't pay attention to the trash and DW placement shown in this picture.

Hi TX Guy, I have the trash pull out to the left of my sink. There’s room to store a few rolls of paper towels in the drawer above the trash pullout. my DW is to the right of the sink. No regrets. BTW - I looked at the sink with all the fancy gizmos. saved a couple grand by foregoing it - can do the same with a $25 strainer that has articulating arms that pull out to fit over my sink.

Photo above shows DW to right of sink. Easy to unload dishes and silverware into island drawers. I love the BIG sink (drain on far right) and Brizo faucet.

@mtpo Thanks for your comments and the pics. Do you think having the trash to the left of the sink vs under the LHS of the sink is a better idea? Or do you think they're about equivalent? That's a very nice arrangement you have with your dishes so close to the DW...it looks very convenient. I hear you about the sink...the unit I'm looking at is about $7K, which is a big chunk of money. The accessories I'm most interested in are the cutting boards and drying racks.

If the trash left of sink is a pull out, makes a lot more sense and efficient!

@bearbev Yes, it will be a pullout regardless of location. I considering the pros and cons of it being next to the sink (to the left, as shown in mtpo's pictures) vs under the sink (on the far left side).

@TXGuy, I suggest trying to figure out your work pattern at the sink" . When I stand in front of the sink to wash and trim veggies, I have the trash pull out open to throw away scraps that I dont put down the disposal. I would find a pullout under the sink would get in my way. Ive seen drying racks that sit over the sink. you probably can find cutting boards that do that too. I figured all the extra funds that I saved on the sink could go toward a column fridge and column freezer, which I am so glad I purchasedEd.

Here’s a photo of the other side of the kitchen - with column freezer and fridge.

@mtpo Yup, work pattern is exactly what I'm trying to figure out...having never used a workstation sink, I'm trying to use my best judgment as to how things will work out, but I'm worried the reality will be different once I actually try it. My current thought is that the trash pullout under the sink will be in the way, but I'm definitely interested in other opinions.

I really like the layout of your columns, with the "landing space" in between. I was originally planning to do 2 joined 30 or 36" columns, but I was inspired by a picture very similar to yours (it may have even been yours?) to split them with a similar arrangement. I am considering putting a microwave in that space, but I am not sure yet.
