Short & stout bedroom w/bulkhead decor recs requested

last modified: 4 years ago

Please help me get out of my head and create sexier master bedroom decor for me and my husband or I may never know romance again, lol.

Here’s my current setup (white oak floors, white/grey rug, RH dupe chandelier, west elm white wood tile nightstands, and clear lamps with woven shades). Long story, but I do not currently own a comforter. 😱

As seen in the picture, I’ve decided to hang curtains (in progress) b/c the light escaping from the cervices of my cellular blinds drives me crazy so I’m choosing functionality over looks there.

I’ve decided to buy this bedding set:

Dilemma 1:

I’ve also been contemplating buying a new bed. Here’s the 2 that I’ve considered, but I’m not sure if the curvy design works for my short wall and the bed comes in many colors so im torn between all of the beautiful options here (navy, emerald emerald, black black, antique white, silver grey, and sapphire):

Dilemma 2:

A Restoration Hardware stylist has suggested that I puchase these metal nightstands to complement a light colored bed:

Dilemma 3:

Should I add an accent wall behind the bed? and under my bulkhead? I feel like this could go either 100% wrong or 100% right. Please note, I am only willling to wallpaper or paint the wall under the bulkhead as an accent wall. Here are some pictures of professionally designed bedrooms with bulkheads, curtains, and accent walls:

Any feedback that you‘re willing to give me on how to thwart romance back into my bedroom space or any advice on my design dilemmas that have plagued me for months would be greatly appreciated!

I think an accent wall below the bulkhead would be great in your room. I would center the bed on that wall, if possible. But would that throw off the position of the ceiling fixture? Maybe it's just the angle of the photo, but something about the ceiling fixture bothers me? I like the metal night stands. There's nothing wrong with your headboard. A dramatic, darker accent wall will help it stand out.

@msjoan, you are amazingly perspective and correct. My bedroom is right aligned because it is short and stout. As such, there is a walkway to the left of the room. When making my electrical plan, I frequently saw inspiration pictures where designers made this design choice to increase functionality and it’s helpful now because there’s more walkroom upon entry and now that im pregant, i can temporarily get a bassinet inside of my room without a problem….had i centered the lighting on the wider wall, everything would be off. Before I made the lighting plan for my house, I carefully examined how houzz designers approached lighting and simular spaces. Here are some completeed looks:

Here is a picture of my actual bedroom from another angle. My bed, tv, the recessed lights are centered on the 11.6ft wall seen here:

My bedroom is 12.3ft (long) x 11.5ft (wide), if stopping at the wall with the tv but 13ft (wide) x 8.1ft (long) if stopping at the adjacent wall that doesn’t connect, due to the slanted 4.5ft entry. There is 3.5ft walkway between the edge of my bed and the edge of the dressers.

As I figure out my bedroom decor, I moved my makeup vanity into my bedroom’s long hall but that can be removed in its entirety later. the long entry into my bedroom is 9.5ft (length) 4.5ft (width).

Our marriage (50 years) was sparked by removing the tv, making it a clutter free zone (your stuff on night tables is distracting) and focusing bedroom usage on bedroom activities. Your furniture is fine but I would focus on comfort, serenity, and throw in some color and personality.

I think an accent wall would look good behind bed. I like youe existing headboard rather than the curved one. Also like the proposed bedding and nightstands. Would look good with mirrors over n/s's. Some pillows and a rug for texture. I agree with getting rid of clutter.

@ashtonchic I will declutter. Then buy the nightstands, the bedding, and a textured rug and will repost some new pics soon(ish).

@Beth H. : I hate to ask you yet another question but since you mentioned slate bedroom walls in the post about my living room, I am wondering if you like the idea of a slate or wood wall here. For your convenience, I have posted your inspiration pics here.

Alternatively, I plan to put up this light grey wall paper to go with this bedding. I would love to hear your thoughts.

@Celery. Visualization, Rendering images, I like the modern hotel vibes that you sent my way. To be clear, I think you're asking me to consider warming toned accents and medium to dark wood nightstands. Is this correct?

I just give your more options to what were suggested. You decide what you like.

Another way to look at Celery's 1st example is to look at the color palette. It is basically neutral but I like how the bulkhead is in a contrasting color. Your furniture is mainly white and your walls are light colored. Your new bedding is also light. I would suggest you come up with a color palette for your room that will tie the look together. It could be high contrast or subtle, but it would help add interest to the room. I'd look for a rug that you could pick colors from for your accent wall, pillows, artwork etc.

Thanks for the pop of color suggestion but I am really hoping to create a "peaceful bedroom." After renovating this house with no GC during the pandemic, I think I've had all of the pops that I can handle, lol BUT if I am making a mistake please help see the right road.

Here's are two more examples of the type of zen like peace I'd like to recreate.

@Celery. Visualization, Rendering images, I really like your idea of the panels. Here are the ones that caught my eye, on wayfair. May you be so kind as to let me know if either of these colors tickles your fancy?

@ashtonchic, per your suggestion, I bought 2 of the below mirrors (in transit) for my bedroom. Is there a world where you think they'd work with the above wall panels or the grey grass cloth wall paper (dark or light grey) that I was previously considering?

I'd like to see wallpaper in a color similar ro your headboard with texture. Take a look at this wallpaper and how the colors in the room work together.

Hey ladies and gents, excuse my silence but I’ve been busy getting this space together. Insofar, I have:

    - painted the back wall repose grey

    - bought grey twill curtains

    - changed the burlap lamps out for black ones

    - bought mirrors that I havent been able to hang yet, my apologies

    - found these frames in my house that i haven’t been able to hang yet

    - started to declutter

Please let me know your preference on this pink vs. gold accent bedding. i would have the matching coverlet, 1 sham, and 1 euro king pillow in the selected accent color. thanks.

My husband thinks that I should choose between the mirrors and the picture frames given the short amount of wall space. I personally like the mirrors but I would love to know your preference. Here are the mirrors that i have.

    Thanks!

@Amy Peltier Interior Design & Home all of your rooms are so beauitful! i cant wait to grow up so i can afford an interior designer! you make it look so easy! 😅

Did you get new nightstands or are you keeping the white ones that match your long dresser. I would not hang the frames - just the mirrors. Get everything in place and then see if the frames work. They might take away from your zen feeling. I'd use the grey accent bedding

rfharmon - where did the comforter on the bed come from? I like it very much!

@ashtonchic i went to the RH outlet where they've had those metal nightstands for months and they were gone. RH has discontinued them so maybe they got marked down crazy but I cannot buy them in the real store now so I’ll have to wait on them to hit the outlet. 😣

I have my eyes on thse nighstands from amazon but I think that it’s absurd that they cost $500 each.

i do see the value in having a more robust nightstand but would also like to say that the bedding ad has a white nightstand in it so parking here for a sec wouldn't be the worst decision ever. 😇

pics of mirrors handing coming soon. 😇

by chance, do you have any recommendations for nightstands?

@Liya macys. it‘s expensive so try to catch it on 50% off sale. I bought on 60% off sale.

Hey guys, I have update pictures! Im so excited to show mu progress, lol!

Here’s 3 options: plain grey, pink accents, or gold accents.

I would also like to know if you all still like my mirrors and their placement?

@rfharmon Wow! Great job & looks like a decor magazine pic! Love the mirrors, the black lamp shades, the tidy night stands - no clutter - like no one sleeps there 😉 As for the colors - subtle difference really & maybe because it’s cold & wet outside in our PNW, I’m favoring door #3 with the brunished gold accents. Nice & warm but still elegant & not too feminine for the DH. But, the pink is pretty too & makes me think of warm season & not too much pink - just enough to be soft. BTW, I really do like your ceiling fixture.

    #3

Maybe it is just my monitor but I like #2 and then #3. Either way it looks great!

Looks really nice. I like the color of 3 but I like the way the pink comforter hangs over the side of the bed more. #3 should be wider. Maybe a few less pillows???
