mystery tree or shrub

I'm hoping somebody can help me id what I think is a tree or shrub. I'm in Zone 6 in NJ. These leaves look opposite to me with smooth margins. It's about a foot or so high so far. Earlier in the season I thought I felt thorns near the base of the leaves but I didn't feel them there today.
