I personally am always more of a fan of two sofas than of a sectional. In a recent move, our second sofa didn't fit through the door to the intended second bedroom /den. These are very expensive sofas and I was not going to get rid of either. We now have two sofas in our living room and I adore them. They are in an L configuration as that is all that will fit in the space. They look great. In my opinion way nicer than a sectional.

I’ve had both & for the situation you describe — relaxing in front of the fireplace/tv or reading — we prefer a sectional. I love the lounge section of the sectional to cuddle up in & my husband likes the straight section, feet on the floor. I found the two couch situation — which I have in another room — is more formal, not as comfy & visually takes up much more room than the sectional which I pair with a comfy side chair & C-table.

I love the idea of a comfy sectional but lets face it, they are basically purchased for that one purpose in a particular area. They are way less flexable. You measure for that one area and thats where it will spend its time. Inevitably, one day you will be sitting on that beautiful couch longing for a change and log on to houzz for help. A Lot of sectionals arent fully finished with fabric on the sides if the seats, which makes the sectional hard to rearrange but on the upside, the newer modular styles are. Soooo, if you really want a sectional, get a modular one because they were built with flexability in mind. They are generally more expensive. I say all of this as a fan of sectionals, had one struggled with it, replaced it, swore them off but considered one for my new home. Ended up with twin chesterfields. Good luck

I think it depends on how you use the space. We put a sectional in our upstairs TV room b/c up there, it's just 2 of us + the dog snuggled up with a movie. In our living room - we currently have 2 sofas (but are about to switch to sofa + 2 chairs), it's more conducive for entertaining, looks nicer & give us more flexibility for arranging (& RE-arranging) the space.

I would do a sectional considering that the tv is over fireplace and up rather high, getting comfy in a sectional will make viewing easier. But I would have put the tv to the left of the fireplace in the shelving unit at a more reasonable height. And the fact that you are 2 people, retired, not many visitors or entertaining (like me!) just grandkids, and this is your only LR/FR, I think sectional will work better. An L shape on the left, facing fireplace, and maybe a chair on the right side with floor lamp for reading when not watching tv. That way it’s open to the foyer and welcoming.

I’d say two sofas. When you are entertaining, sofas offer better seating without people feeling they are all “cozied” in - but you still get plenty of lounging space for reading or tv watching.

I like two separate sofas and two armchairs, and an ottoman or two.….a sectional looks best when put together, which may decide the traffic/access pattern. If the location of the tv is over the fireplace, don’t use low squishy furniture because the viewing angle may be not be comfortable. Have side tables and a coffee table for placing a cup of coffee or a drink or plate.
Be sure to have some color in art, an afghan or soft throw, a few pillows, maybe a more colorful area rug in the center area.

A sectional might be able to work, however you'd have to make sure you measure well and it might be a good idea to get one with a reversible chaise.

I suggest one sofa and two swivel chairs with small table between them. Coffee table in middle.

I suggest a reversible chaise sofa and two comfy upholstered armchairs. Lots of flexibility that way. If you really prefer two sofas, smaller scale chaise ones might work well too. Avoid loveseats at all costs. The bane of good arrangements and rarely seat more than one unless courting lovers visit.
