I would add something like this shelter. It would provide definition, keep you out of most rain and help break up the tall back of the house. They come in different sizes.

Install a patio cover that is translucent and use box planters, potted plants, a swing, privacy screens, etc., around the perimeter to enclose the space.

Next spring Sam's Club will have those free standing gazebos. Adding the sound of a running water feature will actually help the area feel cooler in summer.
