Light strings should not hang lower than 80" (6'8") and higher is better to prevent entanglements. Permanent posts should be set 2' deep so you would need 10' long posts to clear areas where people walk. I have seen poles set in a container filled with concrete. HERE is one variation. However, these light strings aren't pulled as tight or set as high, so it's easier to bump into the lights when they are not on.

First, you should figure out where the lights will plug in. The lights will begin somewhere near that spot. You may need to add a junction box or convert your porch light to a weather-proof outlet. Solar string lights are a possibility.

Then you should decide if you want the lights around the edge of the patio or crisscrossing overhead—the perimeter of your patio is 62' plus more if you want to go around the corner extension. If you crisscross you have to figure the distance from one point to another and add them together, plus a little extra.

I am leaning towards permanent posts as we will have people doing the patio that can dig the post at the same time. I imagine the permanent posts are more sturdy than the container option.

I think I want the lights around the perimeter- although now that you mention it, crisscrossing might look really nice.

I am struggling with where to put the posts in this design - it's hard to make it symmetrical with the patio design.

I doubt bright lighting is desirable for your patio. We once had clear Edison bulbs within our pergola but changed to LED rope lighting - no glare with ample illumination for dining..

Sorry, I didn't get back to you sooner. I prefer the last configuration with the wide X. It would visually energize the space. Another possibility is to outline the patio using 3 posts as below. This would leave the square extension outside the lighted area, but it would still be well lit.

P.S. You are correct that the posts set in containers are not as stable. They are most often used by people who are renting.

Oh! Inspirational photos/vidoes are always really helpful! What a beautfiul backyard and garden! That pergola looks so pretty. A pergola isn't in our budget at the moment - but we hope one day.. The rope lighting makes a nice subtle glow. Love it!
