The pump filter is in a similar location as models that have an access hatch, there just isn't a hatch. So, yes, the machine typically must be disassembled to get to it.

In some cases the bottom panel of the machine is partially open and the pump/filter can be accessed from beneath ... but not always, and the access can be tight if it is possible.

Remove the top panel (screws at the rear corners). The control panel typically must come off, with unplugging of wires involved, unless it can be positioned to sit atop the tub / outer cabinet frame without removing the wires. Sometimes there are snap-on trim pieces that must be removed to reveal hidden anchor screws.

Then detach the outer spring/wire around the tub gasket that anchors it to the machine front panel, and remove the front panel. The door latch mechanism may need to be detached from the front, or the wires taken off of the latch for room to maneuver the front if the wires are too short to move it aside. It's best not to attempt separately removing the door but the front panel will be heavy and awkward to handle with the door swinging. Note that getting the gasket spring/wire back in place can be a challenge.

There will be some residual water spill out when the pump filter is opened.

If you want get a general view of the filter location, find the model number of your machine on the tag visible when the door is open. Look up the model at online parts sources that have breakdown diagrams, such as AppliancePartsPros.com or SearsPartsDirect.com. Find the diagram that shows the pump, which is generally the picture that has the tub and drum.

It's always best to cite the model number when asking appliance questions. A year reference is not sufficient, there may be different machine designs among the various models of a given year.
