It does not look like you have much room for more plants around the agave so anything else should be tiny and groundcover like allowing the agave to remain the focal point. Sedum Angelina or a Delosperma would work.

Eventually the plants will overwhelm everything around them and form a cluster. But in the intervening six years until that happens, a filler plant would be nice. I was thinking maybe some blue ornamental grasses.

Would Delosperma grow extensively all over a mound?

Delosperma are a flowering trailing groundcover. Plant enough of them in the right conditions and they can cover all kinds of mounds.

Depends upon the size of plants you buy. i planted 3 of them ( one gal. size ) at my previous home & they overtook everything around them within a few short years. I'm in So Cal coast. Additionally, they produced ”babies” that sprouted up.

They will very much fill in. Here’s some pics where you can see new plantings and older growth where we pulled from.

@sscotto13 Are you in Big Sur, or is that down towards Mexico? I love the sloping coastline view. That looks like lava rock soil so maybe it is Hawaii?

@stanofh 10a Hayward,Ca S.F. bay area I was playing with the idea of putting a single Firesticks in the center of the mound, where it could grow to be a center point of focus, then plant nothing but Agave attenuata Foxtail around the perimeter of that. I really worry about the Firesticks rotting out in clay soil, so I would probably make the mound out of sandy loam and add maybe 10% garden waste compost to that so that it has at least some water retention and nutrition.

Looks like the leeward side of the Big Island to me too.

These guys are hearty and grown in very little soil. They will block most other things from growing so clusters are best. A fire stick might be pretty if it won’t be too large of an area with one lone stick. Love your Bismarckia!

@stanofh 10a Hayward,Ca S.F. bay area I actually had Firesticks rot out in standard gritty mix, so to see it thrive in clay soil is confusing.

I have blue flame agave and California fuchsia planted together- I’m across the bay from you. I do thin out the agave occasionally to allow the fuchsia some room.

Here is a photo of the tiniest raised mound, done with a small stone wall around it. I added some Mexican grasses on either far end of the planting area, and for now, one Agave foxtail is in the middle, which will probably take over that entire space eventually.
