Recommendation for custom cabinet maker

I really love the inset cabinet look but we are being quoted roughly 45k-50, which is too high that I want to spend on cabinets. Brands included medallion and Bernier (Canada). I’m starting to explore some overlay brands. In the meantime, I read some people paid less for custom local Cabinetry like the Amish. Can anyone recommend a custom maker? We are located in Long Island. Thanks!

You could look at frameless instead of overlay. All wide 3 drawers for your base cabs. This can get you more usable storage. For example a soft close 3 drawer 36" wide base cab with white flat panel fronts is $364 at IKEA with a 25 year warranty. Link. $437 for Grimslov off-white Shaker. There's a version with a two level top drawer for $444 flat front. Some here choose custom fronts with IKEA boxes. In your area I'd search Amish cabinetmakers in the interior areas of Pennsylvania. https://www.shawnee8918.com/aboutus.html

The going rate for luxury products is the going rate. Any custom cabinet maker should be *higher* than that if they are providing a similar quality result. If they aren’t more, there’s something BIG missing from the equation. I know several in the area, and their lead times are 30 months, at more than twice your already “too high” budget. Your eyes are bigger than your stomach here.

Shiloh, among others, is having huge product issues right now. They may not survive the mass exodus of dealers stopping carrying their lines. They were always mid level products rather than luxury level to begin with, and they lost too much skilled labor to be able to even maintain that qualify level. Major issues with product quality being produced.

There is no way for us to tell you the name of a cabinet maker without knowing a lot more about where you are ( LongIsland? ) and I have no idea why inset is what you like . You can get a very nice look with full overlay and a much better amount of storage. This is good example of full overlay but with an inset look

Face frame cabinets are expensive because of the skill and labor needed to make them. They are furniture quality cabinets that will last a lifetime and more.

Euro or what you are calling overlay cabinets were invented to have cheap cabinets easily packaged. they were never designed to be quality canbinets. 32mm was to quicken production.

Simply look at the box of a face frame cab and a euro style cab and you cand easily see which is better quality and why one would cost more to make. First the face frame has to be made and installed, Then fitting doors and drawers to face frame cabinets has to be spot on with no issues.

Its one of those deals where we have been convinced that the cheaper product is better. The space savings is a non issue as the actual box is the exact same size its just the frame creates a 3/4" lip all the way around. 3/4" and only at the frame not the actual box.

Long Island is the home of blue collar workers and if your not one you are still one on the weekend. That said go to a couple large wood suppliers and ask for local cabinet makers. There are tons of smaller one man shops that can produce what you want in your budget.

By the way good luck getting Ikea cabinets with the shortages.

It's doubtful a local custom cabinet maker will be less expensive. HOWEVER, it's more than likely they will have your cabinets done sooner than any current standard/semi-custom cabinet manufacturer. I'm hearing cabinet companies like Omega and Diamond have lead times of a minimum of 26 weeks for production upon order placement. So if you can wait six months or more for cabinets, great. But if you'd rather get them in within 8-12 weeks, it might be worth it to spend the extra money to have them made fully custom by a local guy. Go on Yelp or here on Houzz to find cabinet makers in your geography.

Not sure we’re on LI you are. We used Boss Cabinetry in New Hyde Park (everything is made in their local factory) and they were awesome although I know prices and lead times are up. Obviously not a problem limited to them.

“Long Island is the home of blue collar workers and if your not one you are still one on the weekend.”

One of the more humorous and ignorant statements I’ve read in a long time, @Brian Gannon.

Sure, LI has ”blue collar workers”. So does every locale. Without ”blue collar workers” the country wouldn’t function. So, lower your nose, please.

Long Island is also the home of doctors, lawyers, dentists, venture capitalists, investment bankers, movie and TV stars, famous athletes, artists, and a multitude of self made multi millionaire and billionaire enterprenures. It has some of the priciest real estate in the country. Ever hear of the 5 Towns? Manhasset, and its Miracle Mile Shopping Center (often referred to as Rodeo Drive East)? Great Neck/Kings Point, Mill Neck, Muttontown? How about Centre Island, where Billy Joel lives? The Hamptons?? No, I didn’t think so.

As for Aleia’s question…please give us an idea of the size of your kitchen. For cabinets of some quality, $45-50K range is not unreasonable, for a smallish to mid sized kitchen. I can give you the name of a cabinet maker in Sea Cliff, but having priced them 6 years ago, I can guarantee the price will be higher. Much.

Just to give you an idea…almost 6 years ago, we gut-renovated our kitchen. The cabinets by Tedd Wood (made in PA), one of the better semi-custom lines, were $60,000. This is the kitchen, a wide galley…not small, but not huge.

Long Island is an expensive place to live. It seems to me if you can afford to live there, you should be able to afford 45-50K for cabinets.

I went with the local Amish for the kitchen in our new house. They are great quality and were reasonably priced, although I do not think Amish necessarily guarantees quality. i went with flush inset cabinets and all drawers. All the kitchen and bath cabinets cost 20,000, however i live in rural midwest. My internet is too slow to post pictures but BarnlightElectric featured our house on their blog because we used so many of their lights. It contains a few kitchen pictures.

I orginally posted this due to what i read on other thread on Houzz, where other members explored Amish cabinetry, its not something i necessarily thought out of thin air. @Shannon_WI - thank you, completly agree with your point! Not sure why the tone changes from thread to thread and people start to become rude, when we are all looking for advise. Also thank you for letting me know re: the quality of Amish cabnietry, I am not loaded like alot of people on this thread assumes, since I live in LI - and indeed it is a lot of money (atleast for me it is).

@dan1888 - thank you! I started looking at frameless as another option, than inset.

@User - not once did I say I wanted luxury cabniets, I stated what brands I received quotes from. My eyes are fine, thank you.

@Joseph Corlett, LLC - not sure why you need to bring where i live in into exploring other cabinet options. I don't know if you are have lived in Long Island before, there are plenty of mixed areas and towns, ranging from multi million dollars homes to other parts that are low income areas. Don't assume what people can and cannot afford. Especially as a contractor, you have no clue if something we didn't not account for, needs to be fixed in the house and our kitchen budget has changed. The article you also referenced, is based off of two towns in Long Island, not the entire island.

@Brian Gannon - thanks for the explanation, makes sense. Not interested in Ikea cabniets either.

@newkitchenny55 - I will check them out, we are in West Hempstead, not far. thanks!

@darbuka - your cabniets look great! I will get back to you on the sizing. And that's great info what you provided, I also want to make sure I am over spending and if thats what a quality kitchen goes for, then so be it.

inset cabinets are gorgeous but expensive. Before you give up on them, try to get some quotes from custom shops. They can be very competitive.

I dont understand the comment above suggesting that frameless cabinets are lesser quality than face frame because it's simply not true. There are low and high quality products for both construction types. If you chose full overylay, then frameless is the way to go, IMO, with easier access and wider, deeper drawers. I don't understand why anyone would do full overlay with face frames.

Someone using religion to market their business probably is not all that religious. Nor all that ethical. Nor all that about actual quality. Most often, the finishing process is really sub par.

I once had to work with an "Amish" cabinet company for a job. The guy, while he looked the part, was on his cell phone during most of our meeting. I definitely did not notice that the quality of their cabinetry was superior and I found their finish options to be limited. I worked with another one that was out of state and all documentation had to be mailed back and forth...lol. As you can image, the planning stage of that remodel was LONG. And there were numerous mistakes in the interpretation of the plan. But they were very inexpensive.

There are plenty of well-priced, custom cabinet shops. While you will pay for an independent designer, they may also be able to direct you to quality tradespeople and suppliers. Having a professional vet out your options can be well worth their cost.

Google Oak Park Custom Cabinetry, Harrisburg, PA. They are a family owned company and do amazing work. They travel up and down the east coast. Good luck!

In the case of my cabinets, I did not work directly with the Amish. i worked with a local cabinet maker and he worked with the Amish. The local cabinet maker helped with the design and did the installation. He also built the boxes and had the Amish do the drawers and cabinet fronts. They worked hand in hand. I wanted flush inset and they turned out great. i am not sure how I would have contacted local Amish directly. I imagine that communication could be more difficult.
