Pattypans - or what my dad called 'flying saucers' when we were growing up - are my favorites, especially when picked very young. But I have yet to meet a summer squash I didn't like.

We just have the typical yellow straights and green zukes, some varieties produce better than others but in the end they all taste the same to me. I used to grow crookneck but VgQn doesn't like them, they still taste like the others to me. By the end of the season our summer squash becomes too mush of a goo thing. ;-)

tsugajunkie, I may need to try pattypans again, the grill trick sounds good, it works well with eggplant steaks too.

Robert i am very curious about Patisson. They say it also makes good winter squash? Never heard that about a summer squash? Are they implying eat it young/immature as a summer squash or let it ripen and the skin get hard for longer storage like a winter squash?

A few of my favorites are Zephyr squash (hybrid). It's a yellow and green summer squash & fairly prolific. I like Cocozelle and Striata D' Italia zucchinis. They're very similar in appearance- nice green color with thin white stripes. I also like Lungo Bianco. Its a plump pale zucchini / summer squash.

I happen to like most types of summer squash, so production taste and texture are my major criteria.

I grew Grillin' Zucchini this last summer and liked it best for flavor and use. I'll grow that one again. It only got maybe 4" long, but 4' across. It was great to slice and use however I wanted. I had 3 plants in a pot and got about 1 a day, which was more than enough.

Yes, any winter squash can be eaten immature as a summer squash, and most summer squash can be eaten mature kinda like winter squash (but they might not store as well as a winter squash that is selected for storage). I ate my immature C. maxima winter squash before first frost this year, and they were excellent, sweeter and more colored than summer squash.

Another pattypan fan here! I typically grow "Sunburst". One plant is MORE than enough, it just doesn't stop.
