Underground electrical feeder method

I am planning to install an underground feeder to a barn. I know what I need re: number of conductors/grounding/voltage loss. I plan to do this in June. I had it figured out until I priced conduit, which at current price, will cost more $ than the wire! I have no objection to direct burial of wire, and am trenching with a backhoe so can place wire as deep as I need.
My question is: what kind of wire/cable? I'm not finding an underground rated cable with the right combination of conductors. I can buy different USE-2 wires and lay in the trench. Is that acceptable? I have soil with random rocks so might have to backfill a little with sand before soil. If I can't use individual wires, I may just have to buy a larger cable than planned.
