Because it had been so warm. But I would cover them, going to get COLD.

If they are only a couple inches or less there's probably no need or benefit to covering them.

Bulbs often appear early. If it gets cold they’ll stall and wait for better conditions. They’re very hardy and unless they're about to flower I wouldn't bother to protect them.

My bulbs are all showing about an inch above ground. It was 50 degrees yesterday so I don't blame them. The hellebore buds are also coloring up. It's the sort of winter/spring when I watch the neighborhood magnolias hoping they don't try to bloom early & get zapped:( Don't worry about covering the bulbs, they don't really need it and you'll have snow anyways.

Thanks everyone! It's only coming into my second season with tulips and daffodils and I'm always learning something new, thanks again! Oh and Ken yes I see what you're saying, I also did try to get them 6 inches down but maybe they weren't as deep as I thought.
