Too bad people don't take the time to read the OP where she says counter, sink and backsplash are changing. I agree with changing out the shutters for something less harsh/stark. They detract from your pretty cabinets. Maybe a Roman shade? You can hang a Roman shade higher than the window frame so it just hangs down to just cover the top of the window frame when it's up. It will cover most of that wall (or could) and will make the window seem taller and allow more light into your kitchen. You could add a pendant or even a semi flush light if you take the shade up onto that wall - like this:

Totally agree on a pretty pendant--that task light looks waay to far away to be helpful anyway so win win and a roman shade. Add some pretty and you are set!!

I agree with the other poster about removing the shutters. They can't open all the way because of the adjacent cabinets. As for the space above the window would you consider a set of decorative plate?. Looks like the space might accommodate 2 or 3 smaller plates or one large one.

I would have the window trimmed out and install a sconce.

What is your backsplash material? As mentioned, you might want to consider going around the window:

A piece of art or a nice pendant light and really yhose shutters are way to heavy looking for that space . You could do a nice roman shade like above only mounted above the window a bit. BTW the backsplash is all wrong for those counters

create some illusion of height above window. remove shutters.....take whatever you choose up higher .a valance/ a rod for whatever style treatment you prefer...../ even a shelf that spans across/ the proportions are different now so the window's small size has to be given a different perception however you do it. hi arc faucet when you get to that part. I see the shutters match the patio door situation.all custom??? I just did window treatments for a relatives first floor windows. We priced out a lot of different things. It is a big deal to just remove the shutters esp w the matching other shutters. I would do the other counter/splash/sink etc and see how the budget is holding up. But I dont think the shutter look is quite right..however your whole room is not shown here.

Thank you all for your advice. Its a lot to consider but now I have ideas. Do you think it would worth it to take the new backplash up above the window? (new backsplash not installed yet in photo)

@herbflavor yes, they are custom shutters for the house. They are in all the windows and the slider. Thanks for your suggestions.

The shutters are nice and look great. I would put a sconce as suggested above.

What's your backsplash tile going to be? Bringing that up and around would be an option.

I like the ideas of roman shades to really make the area pretty.

Another vote for high-mounted Roman shade or blind, and maybe a sconce too. The window feels uncomfortably short, and shutters only accentuate the claustrophobic feeling. You want a window treatment that creates an illusion of a taller window.

In this kitchen, I went with a gooseneck light, which seemed perfect.

I wouldn't bring tile up and around unless it's really out of the ordinary -- decorative pattern or something. Plain subway tiles aren't worth all the attention.

If you want to keep the shutters, you could add a roman shade to the blank space and have it hang down over the top of the shutters to disguise the fact that the shutters don't go up higher. or as some of these show, just let the top of the shutters show - it looks like the window could be taller with 3/4 shutters below the shades.

take the tile all the way up, (like this one. and you could do a pendant or a sconce)

(I happen to prefer some type of blind instead of those shutters. the shutters seem to close off the space and make it look smaller. You could have a piece of your countertop cut for the window sill. do wood casing on the inside of the window, or have them tile the inside.

Window casing and tile to the ceiling. sconce is nice. you have the space for it.

you could do casing and tile.. I like the woven wood blind. you could also get a blind w/a larger valance to eat up some of that space above.

OR, install some window casing that goes from cab to cab around the window,

and take the tile up to the underside of cabinets.

But, you have such a tall expanse above your window, I think you should tile it or it's going to look out of proportion.

it will also eat up some of that tall space.

I have shutters throughout my family room which attaches to my kitchen so I kept the shutters there and out nothing above them. It ties in with the rest of the room. Excuse the mess haha

KR, yours look a bit nicer because your window is bigger, more proportional, trimmed out, and you have the white cabs that blend w/it.

OP isn't going to have that same look.

Maybe you're going to have to paint your upper cabinets to tie it in and then put up a shade
