Advice for small living room

We just moved in to our house and I’m debating how to arrange the living room furniture. We’d like extra seating (maybe an accent chair?) and either a small coffee table or ottoman that can be used as table/foot stool/storage/seating. We have a little one one the way so we need to keep the space fairly open…any advice or recommendations are welcome! Im also wondering about colors (if we get ottoman, what color? Grey? Beige? And if accent chair, orange? Green?)

Where do you plan to put a stroller and baby diaper bag? Will you be replacing the lightweight glass tables?

A narrow shelf (say 6 or 8 inches) behind the sofa may be a good location for your plants. That would give you space in front of the other window for a rocking chair or occasional chair.

Your home looks so cozy and lovely!

You'll probably get better suggestions if you:

-Provide measurements of the room included

-Add a photo of the wall/space where your stool and plant are

-State if you're renting or own and can make small modifications (such as wall mounting the TV)

-State if this is the only room for the TV (because I see pros ask this often and feel your pain when someone assumes I have an entire free media room)

-State a general budget / if you're thinking of replacing the sofa etc

Thank you for the suggestions! The small glass tables are temporary and hold our books and tv remotes. We own the home, although for now our budget is limited so we’ll stick with this couch until we can invest on a good quality one. We have a basement where we could move the TV eventually but for now we probably can keep it up here. I’ve added more pictures and a floor plan. Thanks @turtlexinga24 for the tips!

Think storage for whatever extra seating you choose for starters :)

Congrats on baby and new home too.. I love the MCM lampshade, bring that color into the room if you plan on keeping it there.

Maybe switch the bar cart out for a smaller credenza ( love the one you have btw!) or console?

Getting stuff off the floor like plants makes a room look roomier if not bigger lol. The plant in the white pot while I love, is taking up valuable sq cubic feet. in that room soon to be filled with "stuff of babies"

You've got great taste in furnishings!

Here's a handy coffee table only 31.5" wide and at two levels. With a toddler in the home in a few short months, I would get rid of all the glass tables. You'll soon be needing to clear all surfaces of decor too, so focus on art that the little one can't reach.

love it!!! i would get a barrel-style swivel chair and a single ottoman with a trunk style lid. I set a serving tray on mine for drinks etc.

Gorgeous rug! The window wall is pretty busy. Could you move the bar cart from under the window to the corner and use the cart as an end table? Keep the area under the window clear and move the plants in the corner somewhere else. Ottomans with a tray on top would make nice coffee tables. It’s easy to pick up the trays when your baby gets mobile.

You don't say how old or mobile your baby is but if she isn't mobile yet she will be soon. So that bar cart seems dangerous to me. (Don't kids like to pull themselves up and/or reach for things that look shiny and interesting?) Same with all the things on the television console and the plants. I like plants but are any of the ones you have toxic if eaten? I'd suggest getting rid of all of them. (Maybe a fake orchid could work right now?

Plus, it strikes me a very cluttered room. The first thing I noticed in your pictures even before reading the description was the overwhelming landing zone right inside the door. Because the door opens immediately into the living room, do you think it feasible to remove that altogether and develop the habit of putting away all clothes, shoes and bags within a couple of minutes of entering your home? Not only would it immediately free up visual and physical space but it would also remove more temptations and dangers for the baby.

The only piece of furniture I suggest you buy after getting rid of all the clutter is a soft storage ottoman. I googled that phrase and came up with a lot of links.

that rocking chair could come in handy with the baby....

You seem to enjoy combining lively items! Idk if this helps, but a soft retro color lamp/ mirror too - doesn't go with earthy, bold rug.

But I like the rug if with brown ottoman, and grey is ok, etc... !

do you feel a disconnect with all the items in the same space?

    some other ideas.

try this shallow mounted cabinet for shoes and stuff (make find another place for the majority of those coats)

try mounting the tv. you'll get more space on the cabinet and won't look as cluttered

can you squeeze in one of these vintage cabinets in the corner? more storage

another way for you to style around the window
