Baffled on how to make these stairs safer

Regrettably, at some point in the life of my 1860s rowhome someone decided to wall in the stairs and remove the original woodwork. Not only was this pitiful design choice, but it made them slightly treacherous. The current position causes you to walk on the tightest part of the treads. I likely will not live here forever so I'm not up for a full restoration. I would like to try to make them safer while adding back a bit of character, but I'm not sure if I should add some type of post at the top, or which wall to put a rail on since the opposing wall has a window that would make placement tricky. I'm hoping to keep cost low/diy if at all possible.
