First things first, the awning should go. Are you planning on replacing the sliding? Lots of visual interest could be adde with some color alone.

First of all, remove the shutters - they are not needed nor are they sized correctly. I personally like the awning - and it suits the house - but if you don't want it/like it, remove it. If you keep it (is it actually canvas?), maybe you could paint it - stripes would be fun. Is the front window different from that side window off to the right (i.e. old vs. new?) If you can paint the window trim, I would do it in something other than white, which will make the windows look more integrated and more interesting. Do you have an idea for color? Really, anything will work. If you want to stay on the neutral side, a light gray with a color on the windows (again, pick your color!) would look nice. You could use a bright fun color (orange, green, blue, etc.) or something more subdues, but still an obvious color. I think a darker, sophisticated color palette would really be a change from what you see: maybe the gray body, black and white awning, butterscotch-type trim on windows. I can't see your front door, but that could then be a brighter accent color - red, for instance, or any other color you like (make it a precursor to what is happening inside) I think that a pergola, whether traditional or more contemporary, would add some importance to the side-facing front door. Replace the railing to match. I am not sure I would add another material to the facade (like stone): it is small, so that might just further segment it.

Or then, of course, there is this LOL!

The house is adorable. I think the octagon window needs to be replaced. Go for three small windows on that side if it works inside. Here's an example of what it would look like. Then add a covered porch between the door and end of house.

One more item add porch and put the stairs basically where they now are but turn 90 degrees so the walk is down the front of the house. Add sidewalk with cottage garden on the side in front of the large window.

Like Dar's answer...added to that: Larger house # and moved to the wall beside the octagon window. Larger more pronounced light fixture. New windows and remove shutters. It is a cute house!!

Thanks everyone. We are seriously considering rather drastic changes such as sliders/French doors in front, a major porch, all new (large) windows, etc. Your ideas will help.
