Whirlpool bought Maytag in 2006. Maytag appliances were transitioned to Whirlpool mechanicals shortly after.

That wouldn't keep me from buying a better appliance; in fact, I never would have even consider it before buying. I'd rather have an appliance that will likely last 12+ years without needing service, than buy a lesser appliance because someone is there to service it. I don't look for repair options before buying something.....YMMV.

I just purchased the new LG front load and the dryer. Both are stacked. So far like them both but have only had them for 3 weeks

Not a good practice IMO unless one is prepared to replace it for a simple problem (or DIY the fix). Odds nowadays are against a new appliance going for 12+ years (or even 7 years) without some sort of repair. The oft-touted Consumer Reports collects data for only 5 years regards to appliance relliability. Manufacturers are changing mechanical designs much more often than in the past.

If you can afford it and plan to stay in the house a long time, get a Speed Queen. They are commercial grade. Totally worth the investment.

I think it’s wise to consider if you have a repair person nearby. We have Electrolux and the guy comes from 60 miles - and of course charges for it. In 9 years we’ve needed service 5 times.

Those CR suggestions bracket the full-size LG front load models but the "LG front loader with Turbo" with a 4.5 cu. ft. capacity would be the WM4000, not one of the "3000" series models. The WM4000 model is currently priced around $950.

So, mlee1976, are you replacing your old washer to upgrade to something better or do you need the new washer immediately because the old one is out of commission?

If you can wait two or three weeks, LG has often offered substantial discounts on its appliances for sales during the week of Memorial Day. IIRC, the WM4000 models were discounted under $800 last Memorial Day and the larger capacity LG models (also with the TurboWash feature) were discounted similarly. Of course, with this year's supply chain issues, that might or might not happen again this year. Not worth waiting if you need a new washer right away, but might be if your old one is still functional.

Of course, there are the current supply chain difficulties to consider, as well. When recently helping friends with getting a new washer --- FWIW, they wound up buying a WM4000 a couple of weeks ago ---- we found local availability to be spotty. Most of the big box stores around us (in Montana) had none in stock and were quoting ETA's of 10 days to two weeks. One regional chain and one big box store (Best Buy, IIRC) each had several in stock for immediate delivery. Best Buy wanted something like the $1150 list price but the regional appliance chain had it priced at $950 like all the other stores.

Define large family and lots of laundry? we have 15 people at home in our family. We use Miele as nothing else other than maybe speed queen would survive our amount of use. We do 4-8 loads of laundry PER DAY. We average around 3000 hours on the washing machine per year.

Yes, service might be an issue, but it would not be a show stopper. There is no way any of the machines on your list would survive very long in our use case. Can you define what is a large amount of laundry?

Wow - in all my years of owning major appliances, I can think of 2 times I've ever needed a repair in anything less than 10 years old (once a fridge, once a stove). My LG washer was almost 12 before it started giving me problems, and it had never needed repairs before that.

On the other hand, the couple who just moved out of the house I just bought had been here 4 years. and the Samsung washing machine they left for me is not working properly (cycle three times what's advertised, spinning slower and less effectively than it should) - according to the serial number, it's 4 or 5 years old.

You were certainly lucky, Toronto. I’ve had terrible luck here. All the KitchenAid appliances in the 4 year old house we bought broke within the first year. Glad to have had at least some protection with the Home Warranty included by the seller. The dryer broke within 10 minutes of the installation (long story, after 2 months of messing around it was replaced with a new unit). I’m jaded. I’m only buying mid-range appliances now. Well, unless I find the perfect house and I’ll order my Lacanche. 😄

Can't believe I can't buy a washer that heats on all cycles or heats at least to 155. My Bosch will be 16 years in July & I don't ever want to replace it. No one will service an appliance around here if you don't buy it from them. Some dealers don't even offer service at all. I will not pay $1000+ for something I have to trash in a few years.

Manufacturers are building energy-efficient washers. Modern washers and detergents can clean clothes without subjecting them to scalding water temperatures. "Most adults will suffer third-degree burns if exposed to 150 degree water for two seconds." -- CPSC Safety Alert

Frontloaders lock the door and won't unlock when the water is at a temperature that poses a danger. The dumbed-down temperatures nowdays are a factor in complaints about washer stink and a primary factor in the need for tub cleaning cycles and products.

My friend just bought a new washer. She knows a repairman and he said a basic Whirlpool and GE are giving the least amount of problems nowadays and to stay far away from Samsung and Maytag.

Whirlpool bought Maytag effective 4/1/2006. Maytag washers are Whirlpool since shortly after that date.

Maytag is a Whirlpool Corporation brand together with KitchenAid, Hotpoint, Amana, Jennair and other brands whose products are only sold overseas. In CR's tests, six Whirlpool and Maytag front-load washers performed similarly and have the same predicted reliability.
