How do you get this door out of the pocket? Open and close it I mean: I don't see the pull hardware.

$1.98 quality everywhere you look in that pic. Are you not even gonna comment on the terrible paint job? It’s worse than the carpentry. Bondo will fix the bad mortising. Nothing but days of sanding and repriming will really fix the glopped on with their feet paint job.

The awful paint job is what jumped out at me.

And locks on closet doors? Why?

If any of these closets are walk through, like the closet is connected to the bedroom or a bathroom on one side, and to the laundry which is connected to a hallway on the other, then locking capability makes sense.

I don't imagine you can get your contractor to make it better. As long as the hardware works, there is no leverage. You'll probably have to do it yourself.

It's all painters caulk, not paint, because the mortise was made too big (and maybe a bit too deep, can't tell). You would have to remove lockset, scrape out the caulk, cut the hair off the MDF, and then fill the perimeter of the mortise with a wood filler (I'd probably use water putty so it has less chance of breaking apart when cutting). Refill coats as needed, sand, then remark the plate size and cut the filler for the plate. A chisel would probably just crush any filler, so use only a utility knife. It's just labor and patience is your friend.

I should of written - why does MY builder think he’s a master carpenter?
This is a walk in closet- no lock but a “pop out” lever to pull the door shut. I will be using the door/closet at least twice a day so this will irk me until it is fixed.

You could replace it with another that would fit more cleanly into the existing mortise. Measure the mortise and try to find something that matches up or requires a slightly larger mortise.
