Not seen here often either - I believe it's classified as "threatened" in Michigan. By coincidence, I had purchased a few small plants from a mail order nursery just this spring. Planted them in a semi-shady spot in the backyard that doesn't get too dry. I'm hopeful they will eventually look as robust as the ones in your photo, but I'm not all that sure they'll be happy in my soil conditions.

Hydrastis canadensis. Quite a lovely thing.

Yes, it is Hydrastis canadensis, Goldenseal. It is growing in a well drained wet meadow in as much sun as I can give it. This is the first year it has set seed. At year three after planting the leaves have reached close to Mayapple size.
