The other is a Chenopodium. Perhaps C album. Not a sunflower.

floral no wonder it looked familiar but not. I have C.a. but here it always has that whitish cast to the leaves. This one is so green. I wonder if C. quinoa is possible.

Hmmm... chenopodium, as in lamb's quarters ? Isn't that considered a weed by many ? I could have sworn I planted a sunflower seed in that location, that's why I put some chicken fence around it to protect it from wild rabbits,. ha ha.

Maybe an Atriplex species?They are closely related to Chenopodium, in the same subfamily Chenopodioideae. A few species look close, patula, micrantha, prostrata. Atriplex patula is common in Ontario. Uses, edible, medicinal, erosion control, desert reclamation, fodder. The uneducated would call it a weed. I always plant some extra sunflower seeds, just in case critters eat them or the one seed that looks fine isn't viable. Both Chenopodium and Atriplex have variable shaped leaves, and Atriplex leaves can be more of a triangle shape. Chenopodium was an important crop to Native Americans. The leaves and stems were eaten and the seeds used as a grain.

Yes, perhaps Atriplex. Both are variable, as Jay says. And both edible.

Thanks for the info. Tried it, tastes somewhat bitter. It's getting pulled out, presently we have no need for it, have already too much lettuce and spinach and chard all coming at once......
