KitchenAid Induction Cooktop Loud Noise

4 years ago

Hi, I recently installed a new KitchenAid Induction cooktop and it seems a little loud. I'm worried there is something wrong with it, but want to make sure I'm not crazy and should expect this performance. I took a quick video running it with an Induction compatible pan. I'm curious what Houzz thinks of thus noise level.

That's a little loud but not concerning

    Does it do that with all your pans or just that one?

    Yes, this pan is the best I have been able to find so far. I've been through three different sets and various other pans to make sure the issue isn't the pan.

    Have you try pots or pans that are made in one piece construction with no connecting pieces such as a cast iron pan or pot?

  • 4 years ago

    That is pretty unpleasant. I've got one All-Clad pan that will do that when it's on a smaller burner that's set very high. And one smaller cheaper saucepan that does that sometimes at particular fill levels when a lid is on the pot. For all other pot/burner configurations, I hear nothing. Maybe some pots make a tiny noise I can hear by really listening for it. I could not live with that kind of noise every time I cooked.

    I have average quality pans and pots and cast iron and i hear either nothing or very low vibration that stops quickly (i have a GE profile induction cooktop). i would call kitchenaid.

    Yes, a cast iron is slightly quieter.

    I called kitchen aid, they sent a 3rd party tech. He agreed it was very loud and tried swapping some parts, but that didn't help. Then the tech called kitchenaid tech support and they decided it was an acceptable level of noise and told me to live with it. I asked to have the cooktop replaced because it seems defective and kitchenaid basically told me too bad.

    eesh, that is unpleasant. I had no idea that this was possible. I hope you can get it resolved. Bad on KA if they do not help you.

    So sorry. That is a really unacceptable noise level. KitchenAid needs to make this right. If you bought from a good local appliance company, talk to them and see if they can offer help.

    There have been reports of this induction buzzing before. You can go to Youtube and search "induction cooktop buzzing" and see a bunch of videos like yours. The causes vary, but they include improper or inadequate wiring to the cooktop, faulty cooktop, or low-quality pans, or a combination of any of those. I would get an electrician to look at the wiring and connection to the cooktop. And I would insist that Kitchenaid swap with a new cooktop if it's still under warranty. Start with the store you bought the cooktop from, and also go to Kitchenaid customer service and escalate - don't let them try to weasel out of it. Look up the Lemon laws in your state and invoke them.

    This forum is extremely pro-induction, and while I do see the advantages to induction, I nevertheless often bring up this buzzing issue when there is a thread with a bunch of people insisting to someone they must get induction.

    You might also check with your credit card company if you charged the purchase since some of them offer wareanty coverage on purchases.

    I get noise occasionally (with my Big Chill range, manufactured by Blue Star) depending on the cookware, what's in it, and the temperature setting. The sound your'e getting is close enough to what' I've heard that I don't think anything is malfunctioning, but it would be irritating if it was all the time with every piece of cookware.

  • 4 years ago

    That's completely unacceptable. We have an induction cooktop and get absolutely NO buzzing at all.

  • 4 years ago

    The noise is the pan, not the appliance. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT APPLIANCE. As I have stated many times before the process of creating the induction field is 100% silent. The only sound you will normally hear from the appliance is the cooling fan. As you create the field, it excites the magnetic material in the pan. In the video posted the power was set to maximum. quality of pan is questionable, set power to boost equals buzzing sound. As the power is decreased, the noise level is decreased as well. While I have some good pans, none of them are 100% silent on a boosted setting. On a side note, If you can hear your electrical supply wires humming inside your home that correspond with the use of the appliance I recommend you stop using the appliance immediately and call an electrician to diagnose the issue.

    kevinande, what pan do you recommend? I tried several reputable brands and all make the same level of noise.

    The wires do not make noise and do not get hot. The electrical meets code for this appliance and load.

    You sound like an induction expert, do you have any advise to diagnose the issue?

    I have the exact same cooktop mine does emit some buzzing sounds particularly at higher settings... but it's tolerable to me ( I could really hear your cooktop in the video).

    Of course I would accept any level noise emanating from my cooktop as it popped about three weeks ago.... parts are backordered for weeks or months. Even if I was dumb enough to want to replace the cooktop, they seem unavailable as well.

    The only saving grace is that two of the three parts needing replacement are under parts warranty... not service though... if I could get them.

    Good Luck!

    @David

    Other than cast iron it is going to be trial and error depending on your tolerance level. Even cast iron produces some noise at high power levels. I generally refrain from recommending a particular brand, however I will point out that cost does not necessarily correspond with quality. No matter how much or how little you spend on pans you will not completely eliminate the noise. If the noise bothers you because of medical reasons then you may want to rethink this purchase. If you consider the noise just to be a nuisance then you will have to decide if you are willing to live with it or not. There are several posters on here who truly have an adverse reaction to the noise. As I pointed out in my previous post the noise level is directly proportional to power levels. With that in mind it is not necessary to boost the pan for every dish. The primary take away here is the technology is functioning as designed, which is why the manufacturer will not entertain a refund/replacement.

    All that being said it is truly a remarkable way to cook and if you can get past the buzzing pans I think you will enjoy it. I have used it for over a decade now and it is my preferred way of cooking. I would not choose any other form as long as I have the option.

    I just placed a Scanpan, an All-clad, a Calphalon, a Berghoff, a Ninja, and an iron skillet on my induction cooktop all at boost or level 9. Not the tiniest decibal of a buzzing sound. There ONLY sound I get is the water beginning to boil.

    @drsaj, what brand of induction top do you have?

    Unfortunately, the Lemon Laws By State linked above by M Miller pertain to ‘motor vehicles used and designed for the transportation of passengers’. You would have to research if your state has a lemon law that specifically is relevant to specific household appliances (for instance, an induction stove vs a vacuum cleaner vs a tv).

  • 4 years ago

    @2rickies, we have a Thermador.

  • 4 years ago

    Buy better quality pans. Even Ikea has low coat decent induction pans. Its a start.

    @drsaj thanks, you are a true scholar. would you mind taking a quick video to show the noise of the all clad pan?
