Is my tree dying?

He hasn’t been looking too good this year 😬 Now the bottom has normal leaves (that are leaning way down) but the top looks really bad. It’s green still though so I have no idea what’s going on. Any help is appreciated! If it’s at the end of its days that’s fine, I just want to know if I should cut it down. Thanks!!!!

I’m not sure :/ the first 2 are the healthy leaves. 3rd are the ones hurting but the further up you go the worse they get. Thanks for the help!!!!

We would need to know quite a bit more about the recent history of this tree in order to diagnose what is ailing it. Additional imagery showing more detail of the trunk, the base of the tree, and the primary structural branches may help too.

Has there been significant weather trauma, like snow/ice storms? Has there been construction nearby, like utility trenching or the like?

The picture you show of foliage which is ’hurting’ is, in fact, fine. Lindens always drop dead flowers and bracts at this time of year. The completely dead branches, however, are a problem. Are they all definitely Linden branches or is there another tree, other than the conifer, behind the Linden?

Thank you everyone!!! I’ll take more pictures later today. The dead branches are definitely the same tree, it’s the only one in my front yard and the hedge is kind of taking over the light on that side. Yes- there was a really late heavy snow (Denver, CO) that damaged a lot of trees. It seemed somewhat ok for a little while but now all of the branches are bending over, almost like the leaves are too heavy for it, and the further up you go the yellower and smaller the leaves get. Anyway, I’ll get more pics in a bit. Thank you so much for the help!!!!

Are you sure the small yellow ‘leaves‘ you are seeing are not just the flower bracts?

Hi! so incredibly sorry for the delay, i appreciate you helping!!! im not sure what flower bracts are :/ I just cut off as many dead branches as i could reach… SUPER dry. i took pictures of rhe stump, closer up of leaves and i put a healthier looking leaf ranch next to the other one so you can see the difference. Hope yhis helps! THANKS!!!

Looks like the "pale" branches just have an overabundance of flowers, bracts and then seeds, which can cause the leaves to be smaller. Still, the dead branches are a concern.

Ok, got it. Thank you!!! Good new that it sounds salvagable! It was a really pretty tree before this season.

Yeah, I hate how the Japanese beatles come out in hoards :/

The bottom branch has been bare at least this year and last year. Maybe before but I can't remember. I cut it off last night. Well... one of them. There are still a lot of dead branches I can't reach (I can reach the bottom ones showing.... cutting today, I needed a saw).. Should I get a ladder and cut those down higher dead ones too or are they ok? Here's another picture from the house angle and it's cloudy out so maybe you can see better.

Also the dead branch side is on the hedge side and is bare up until the top of the hedge (I had it "cut back" last year but the landscaper barely made a dent! GRRR! It's on the list to do). Anyway, could the out of control hedge be effecting the tree somehow? It's not getting light on that part. I was thinking of removing it but too pricey at this time :( I am tearing out the whole island though and just making a little circle of hostas around the tree instead.

If the hedge is shading the side of the tree it could affect it. Is that a dead patch in the hedge? Or is it a reflection on the window?

Oh that’s just a reflection. The hedge is actually looking healthier this year than it has in a long time. I heard from a landscaper you can basically cut those back a TON so I just need to find the time to do it. Hopefully that’ll get some sun to the tree again!
