Newly cut back Canna's leaves emerging tattered and weak looking

last modified: 2 years ago

It's mid summer and I thought when I bought these cannas they'd be happy to be cut back and allowed to regrow. I have them in a protected porch, not much wind, yet the new leaves are unfurling to look rather sad. Any clues as to why and what I can do to improve this situation?

Photos would help... Porch makes it sound like they aren't getting enough sun.

By porch I mean they aren't in the blasting sun all day. They do get strong indirect light and morning sun. At over 100 degrees for over 50 days...that's just the most prudent thing I can think of, especially since they were in a nursery setting with shade cloth before I cut them back. Here is a photo

Why did you cut them back they do not rebloom only add more blooms and now you will probably get no more flowers this year . Pull them in the fall dry them store the tubers in a cool dry place and replant next spring and put them somewhere sunny and enjoy them and do not cut them back in the middle of blooming season

I cut them back because they were horrible looking and broken almost to the base. I am not worried about the blooms. I only asked why the leaves looked so shabby.

Maybe someone can address the question at hand and not assume so much. I actually wanted this particular canna FOR the leaves. Does anyone know why the new leaves would look so sad. THAT is the question, in case any of you know the answer, I'd appreciate it.

Thank you, do you have a preferred product?

Bonide systemic insect control Or just ask for a granular systemic insecticide & check the label to make sure it treats for leaf rollers. I use it every spring on my Cannas.

I just noticed my other two cannas are coming out without the same problem. The leaves are very beautiful and dramatic, deep maroon and green swirls..I'm giddy to see that! I will try the Bonide asap. Thank you so much...the tattered one just put up another and it looks fleabit almost...just at the very tips...and then shattering all the way down.

You are very welcome. Like I said, I use it iin the spring as they are emerging as a preventive & mine never have any problems. It really works!

I wanted to share something as priorities shifted and I was unable to get any product on that canna. Today I noticed the new leaves without any pesticide whatsoever, unfurled in perfection. There is even a brand new BLOOM...so those of you who call yourselves PRO or consultants might want a better grasp of the facts next time u disparage someone so sharply for doing something clearly was the right thing at the right time.. As you can see the cutting back not only resulted in better looking leaves (finally) but also encouraged it to rebloom in less than 2 weeks. You might want to take notes. Houzz is such a great resouce and community. Let's keep it helpful and civil...and INFORMED!1

I've attached a picture. The bud is sitting pretty in the center if not obvious..;)

I may be the only one watchin this...but I think this is too cool for school! I was about to cut back this bloom as it was strarting to go down, when i noticed this TOTALLY DIFFERENT BLOOM!! I'm so curious if anyone else has seen such a thing! This is the same canna!

I have not seen that happen before on Cannas. Very cool!

I have a lot of garden variety yellow ones - very vigorous, spread like crazy. I bought some paler yellow with orange speckles. Now I'm seeing speckles on the original ones! It seems like they're hybridizing, which I didn't anticipate.

Also have some of the red ones I got in a trade with a Houzz person. They're also spreading. I've been donating a lot to our local cemetery and for plant sales, but lately have been pulling and trashing some.

Would be happy to find someone who wants them.

Stranger still, I could have sworn the cannas were blooming a true red when I bought it, but I cut them back so quickly, it's hard to say for sure. Maybe it is hybridizing wiht the other cannas at the nursery?

My red-leaved ones have small, relatively inconsequential orangy-red blooms. Doubt I even bothered to take a picture. By contrast, my original yellow ones have big, showy blooms until Thanksgiving.

I think Cleopatra was the name on one of the tags...and it was a hugely showy yellow and red combo. But I can't remember exactly the details and I threw away the tag.
