Can you provide pictures? I’d remove the shoot from below the graft now, not wait. I’d leave new buds along the trunk above the graft. They can always be removed later but at the moment they are supporting the top. Your tree is desperately trying to grow but your current technique is forcing it to grow from the rootstock and not the scion.

Agree with removing everything below the graft. Also that we need a photo of the entire tree soil to canopy.

Make certain that your deep watering in indeed deep enough and keep your fingers crossed- this extreme heat is a challenge everywhere.

Quick clarification. All buds removed were from below the grafting. The tree has 2 grafting points. 1 above the roots and a second near the top.

Ive made a note to remove the shoot asap.

Also note that the lines were added temporarily to protect the tree from recent storm winds.

BTW the shoot was already there when the tree came from the nursary. I was a bit surprised they didnt prun it.

Ah, two grafts. so remove that long upward pointing branch and rub off any buds on the trunk. For a tree planted two months ago in full leaf, in the heat of summer, it actually doesn’t look bad. The tattered leaves look more like something’s eaten them, or they have been shredded by wind or hail, rather than heat damage.

ill prun that bad boy tonight. Yea she arrived with a few of those terrible beatles feasting on the leaves. I was sure to give them a terrible end.

Wind, hail, heat… its been a pretty awful summer for the tree.

most trees only flush once peer year..

second.. in high wind.. you stakes are more likely to snap it right where the two lines FIX the trunk ... you made it worse than without.. trust me on that.. ask me how i know ...lol ..

instead of staking and tying... get a pole stouter than the trunk.. and SPLINT it ... making the whole trunk more stable ...

maybe a 6 foot bamboo pole.. even better if you can slide it in the ground a few inches ... and then tie it ..

That appears to be in way better shape than I anticipated!

Get that sprout off, use Ken's staking suggestion, and keep watering and I think you'll be fine.
