thank god you knew what the were talking about junkie.. because based on the post.. i had no clue

and with no further info.. how about you use the soil where the roots of the plants you want to grow are located ... its seems pretty straight forward to me..

if you are growing a 2 foot perennial with a root ball of about a foot.. then get soil from around 8 inches down ... etc .. no need to go 8 feet down.. and on the other end of the spectrum ... nothing really grows in the first few inches ...

And thanks Ken, bc the dirt is very hard to dig - at least I won't have to dig too, too far down. Other than a citrus and probably some lawn, I don't know what we're going to plant.
