Home automation

First, I want to mention that I am retired but spent most of my career in IT so very technology literate.

We installed a Crestron system in 2019 as part of a new build. I will not do this again. It was grossly overpriced for the functionality we experienced, did not allow me to do simple things like reboot the system, change the times lights came on and off etc without contacting the installer at a cost. Also had issues with the interface to my pool and cameras.

Probably the biggest consideration for the new home we are building is being able to access the new functionality provided by all the things connected to the home automation system. By using individual apps for each of the devices that is connected, I can get all the new functionality by just upgrading the apps, the home automation system is configured to handle based on its interface. My pool, garage door opener, cable tv/internet provider, alam system all have upgraded various features the I can access by using their apps but cannot using the expensive home automation system.

My next house will NOT use a Crestron system and still questionable if we will use a centralized system or choose to use individual apps.
