Seeking design ideas for bedroom - I'm stuck!

Hi All,

I want to update my primary bedroom, but I am quite indecisive. I have spent HOURS online and I can't seem to pick anything because there are too many choices. The white duvet, purple sheets, nightstands, and pink chair are new. I'd like ideas on the following:

1) Throw pillows for the bed

2) Table lamps for the nightstands

3) Wall art above the bed

4) Eventually, I want to get a new rug, so open to ideas there.

The rug tho pretty is not really a good size. if it is rectangular turn it long ways and have it more under the bed. right now it just looks stuck there. We also need to see the other side of the room. so we might understand the rug better for example. That bed would look lovely with a quilt or some more layers. Adding curtains would really soften the space and make it more cozy. I could also see adding a bench at the end of the bed. Rather than lamps maybe swing arm wall scones. if you stick with that rug it needs to tie to the bedding or art.

google black metal bed frame it will pull up lots of ideas.

I’ve had this photo saved and think it has many ideas you might like for your room. As RL Relocation LLC mentioned, a layered bed could be really lovely.

I just wanted to add that it would be nice if you pulled the rug under the bed a few feet. I think it visually grounds the bed in the room, and also feels good under your feet as you get in or out of the bed.

Yes you the rug up to the nightstands and you could get white curtains and then hang them up if you need blackout get black out then pull the chair that they don't crunch the curtains and have them come down to brush the floor barely touch it

You did a lovely job, actually. It's very serene and not all cluttered up. What color are the walls?

    Some suggestions:

--Art work in a dreamy style. This is an Etsy print that you can order horizontally. Do an online search on Etsy or Society6.com and put in the palette you want--pinks/purple/gray--not too much gray.

--Treat your corner windows as one size like this, in white:

Sconces for bedlamps. Get a couple that extend out for reading in bed.

I agree with RL that sconces are a better choice than lamps. Your new night stands are small, and then you would have more room for a clock, glass of water, tissues, jewelry, etc., on top of them.

Yes, to sconces. I'm going to re-edit my answer to remove tabletop lamps.

These are all so helpful! Do you have any suggestions as to pillows on the bed?

Pillows are dependent on the rug selected. It's too time-consuming to supply pillows for every scenario I have posted.

You've started really well with an overall neutral palatte. You need to first find artwork you really love. It''s such a personal thing. Do you like modern absract, or traditional landscaes/ flowers etc? Then look for a muted neutral? rug that blends with art colors and style. I'd opt for neutrals that blend raher than repeat colors because it's such a big area. Careful not to repeat the same colors too much, it can overwhelm you quickly. Remember you don't have to match, just blend. This being your bedroom it should be calming and not too busy looking. Also keep an eye out from making the room look like a little gitl's room. Pink and purple are rather traditionally associated with little girls. Keep it more adult and sophistcated. Adding a warm cream/beige color or dark gray or black will keep it a more adult look. Good luck!

Here’s a few suggestions for pillows and art with your existing rug. The last three are from Wal-Mart.

Your rug and curtains will dictate the bed pillows. You need a bigger rug that makes a color statement. You can have purple and keep it sophisticated.

Rugs with purple can be very different. Some ideas from Wayfair.

Other ideas. Some are from Etsy.

    More. More contemporary.

    One more.

Or you can keep the rug neutral and have purple as accessories.

Your current rug is fine. So unless you have a bunch of money, currently burning holes in your pockets, it is not necessary for you to get a new rug to suit someone else’s tastes - and/or to comply with erroneous “rug rules.”

As far as art: It is basically impossible to pick art for someone else And even if it were not such a daunting task, I truly believe that people should really select their own art. What are your interests? What colors do you like? What type of atmosphere do you want in the space? Those might be some things to keep in mind - as you look around. Etsy.com is a good resource for art - all types. Posters, prints, photographs, metal art, textiles/tapestries, and original paintings. You can find a piece of art that you like - and then pull a color or two from the art for a pillow or two. But the pillows, etc. do not necessarily have to match the art. Art stands on its own.

Ok, so I now see that you want to eventually get a new rug and are also looking for ideas for that. So I apologize to all the rug posters.💙

I think you should start with the art - if you are planning to get art for above the bed; and then can decide if you need a new rug and what type of rug. Your current rug is very neutral, so it’s a good backdrop for any art that you choose.. If you are planning to get a new rug, anyway - you could get something similar to what you have - but a bit larger. The rug doesn’t have to go all the way under the bed - unless you want it to.

If you want to bring in more bold color and/or pattern on a rug - and having a neutral backdrop for the art is not as important to you - then get the rug first.

I would start with draperies for the windows….preferably long pinch-pleated panels….in a patterned fabric OR a solid fabric. Then you can select a solid bedspread to match one color in patterned drapes or…a patterned bedspread which includes the color of solid draperies.

I would bring also textile in windows.

Pillows are the very last thing to choose. Pick art and rug first then pillows that echo those choices.
