I think a dining table with a classic brown shade is much more inviting and it'd be a better fit for your setup as well. Also, I'm really not a fan of the lighting in the kitchen - it seems those hanging accessories dim the place too much...

I'm sensing too much black and white, and a feeling of harsh, overall. The entire space would benefit from some wood tones, some color. Also lighting .

The black table ? Not really the issue. How about a chair change which would reduce the formal feel already happening in the dining area? Upholstered chairs in a color? A wood toned chair with upholstery in a color? A wood toned serving console/cabinet? A less formal light over the dining space? A less dark and rather dreary feeling rug?

Do you need BOTH dark sofas in the great room, or could you put the two white chairs opposite one of them and add an accent comfortable chair? What about some wood float shelves both sides of the fire?

You're missing some warmth, color, texture in both spaces : ) even if they remain very neutral

Unless you want to switch up more than just the console, stay with the black, but don’t match the table. If you want a less monochromatic look add in color with art, pillows, throws, lamps….

Not a Pro here. I like the black console.
To add warmth, you need art, drapes, plants. To add brown, I would add baskets for throws.

Since your funtishing are black I would think a black sideboard would work in your dining area. However, as others have said the black/white contrast should benefit from including wood tones, other colors, other textures, etc. Your walls appear rather bare. Would suggest you include artwork and other accessories to help minimize the minimalist look.

Contrast the traditional black table. Any of the pieces below would complement what you have.

Why does your table not match the direction of the linear chandelier?

@opportunitygreentea thanks for the feedback! I should have mentioned that changing out the pieces isn’t N option since everything is less than a year old.

@Jan MoyerId like to add a console in a wood tone! I can’t/won’t change the chairs or furniture because everything is new and I’ve only had them since June. Changing the rug is an option though. It’s a new house so we still have a lot to do in terms of art, curtains, etc. Thanks for the help!

@Norwood Architects totally agree! It’s a new build and we’ve only been in since June so I was waiting until the furniture pieces are in before proceeding with curtains and art.

While I love your dining table, I would do something different and slightly unexpected for a console. Natural Wood, or even something colorful, as has been suggested here. Something “out of the box.” Bold. Unusual. You have created a beautiful neutral room with classic pieces. Now…add some personality! Something you might initially say, “Oh No!” to. But then, after a while, you look at it again and say.. “Maybe?” And then you say…”Well, I might just try it…”. And then, “OMG! I LOVE IT!” That sort of thing. That is what you need to do. When you see it, you will know it.

Two things stuck out, your reference to wanting to keep the dining room more casual and your living room‘s laid back feel. Maybe consider a light contemporary piece, a new chandelier, plus lighter rug would all move room towards a more relaxed room.. Add some contemporary art and accessories, repeating colors from living room.

ptreckel, when I go into a furniture or decor store and they ask me what I am looking for, I always answer with "I'll know it when I see it" !

I admit to having moments when a designer has suggested something to me and I have said “NO!” Quite emphatically. But then…as I begin to think about it, I come around to wanting to see how it “looks”….and then, I often come to the realization that I was wrong and they had suggested that one thing, that perfect thing, that can make a room “sing!” Often, however, when I see something…I can honestly say, “(It) had me at “hello!!”

@maureen thank you! Everything you see is brand new so my husband would probably not be thrilled if I started replacing things already. I do like that piece though. I don’t like when you can see thru and that looks tall enough too. Thank you!
