I'd probably do closed cabinets instead of open shelving to contain the clutter. But I do like hanging a rod as they did here for drying delicates:

A lot of people shy away from the wallpaper because it is such a PITA to remove but removable wallpaper has come a long way.

I’d look for a paper that contrasts with the paneled wall outside the laundry room, but has both the off white of that wall and the white of the washer and dryer. It should also reflect the color palette of the adjoining space.

What would go on the wood shelf that you showed - laundry supplies? Unless I am willing to commit to decanting laundry supplies into attractive containers for forever then closed storage is better

Like many others we agree that wallpaper would be a great choice! Whether whimsical or organic, here is a great place to infuse personality into a hardworking, often overlooked utilitarian space. We would advise against shiplap in your laundry room, as it would compete with the moldings nearby. Just pick a wallpaper that includes the white tones outside the room, and is so appealing it gets you excited to do laundry! Here is a recent update on one we did that used fresh, fun wallpaper. Wallpaper. Something neutral in color and design that won't jump out and grab you. Laundry rooms are dusty, linty environments. Mine is, no matter what, and I'm careful with the dryer lint screen. Do you really want to be dusting all those slats of shiplap a couple times a year? Nope, I wouldn't, either. Wallpaper or nice paint.

Too much, too much. First of all, don't fall for the ship lap trend. Ship lap is a particular design, with rabbited edges, meant to repel water. Used particularly for the siding of wood built boats.

Yes, wallpaper is the choice for the laundry room.

Moving into the adjoining room? Guessing you do not want to remove the picture frame trim, but it would make a difference and it is easy to pop it off. You could leave it under the chair rail.

You can actually do absolutely anything including shiplap in the laundry room--that's why it has a door. It can be 70s disco theme with a mirrored ball and it would be fine. Formal guests won't see it. It's for you and your family so long as you close the door.
