POLL: Open or closed shelves in your primary bathroom?

Beach House · More Info

Are you a fan of the open vanity, or do you keep things behind closed doors?

Vote and tell us about it in the comments below!

All open, all the time!
Closed to hide my stuff (and potential mess).
It’s a mix, I need a bit of both in my world.
I don’t have a vanity in my primary bathroom.

In my case our larger bathroom is the one used by myself for my bath at night and for our international students the rest of the time . I have a rather small bathroom with a tub/ shower , vanity and toilet . On the wall I installed what was actually a cd storage unit from Ikea 15 yrs ago It has a frosted glass door so it really makes me keep the insides tidy and not jammed full of stuff not needed every day .My vanitu has open shelf at the bottom and thta is where I store extra towels . Very simple but works very well .

I don't do well with closed shelves or closets; although I have them, I don't choose them.

Behind doors of course. Who wants a full view of your epsom salts, water pic attachments, humidifier, array of Tylenol, aspirin, Advil, ibuprofren, Vagisil, and contac lens solution?

Closed storage all the way. The women in my house use many spray products which leave a film on everything. I can’t imagine having to wipe all those products when cleaning the bathroom.

I try to balance the aesthetics with the very real maintenance of dusting shelves. Who knew dog hair could float so high? The idea of glass doors for cabinets is attractive or choose just a few open shelves to break up the visual of a closed in space and agree with yourself that you'll have to dust them. I also really, really consider what I store on those open shelves. Not towels that will need washed before you can use them! If you really need the storage go with closed in cabinets. if you have the luxury of ample storage and a few items that can be easily cleaned that won't annoy you, open shelves might work.

I think it depends on the size and style of the bathroom. I like the picture above but that bathroom is large. In a smaller room, closed and more vertical storage than horizontal would look better.

I like to display towels in my guest bathrooms on the open shelf. If the shelf fits baskets, I find it very convenient. Pull up a basket for morning and nighttime routine or when doing hair and then put the basket away.

We use the vanity storage and added a tower shelf between the vanity and shower. In the toilet closet, we removed a facing bidet and added a storage unit.

I find the most dust, hair, moisture, etc. in most homes are produced in the master bath. For that reason, closed shelves and drawers for me.

We think, the majority of the time, open shelves are not needed in a master bath. However in some instances it can work. Please check out our second image below to see what we mean:
