I think if you want to cover the entire wall you would need to close up the cutout on the left, fill out the notch and maybe keep only the cutout on the right.

Before closing the cut-outs, remove the toy box and giant tennis ball. Let it be what it was originally designed to be before making changes.

Make the shelves for minimalist display, not for storage.

That is not the wall to tile or close up. Just remove all the clutter and add one striking art statement above the fireplace.

Perhaps the original designer intended the cut-outs and ledges for the display of art objects.
