Which rug brings my living room together best?

Hi Everyone it is me again! You already know I love color and the eclectic. But I also like things a little funky. And yes I love this rug but I keep waffling between the two. You guys have given me such good feed back that I am hoping you can help me decide.

Take a look at both sides and tell me which rug brings the room together the best or does it even matter?

Thanks so much!

Just wanted to say, your room there is a GREAT example of making eclectic style work. Nice, nice, nice! Please, post a pix of the dining area too. So for the rugs, you mentioned "waffling" when taking the chair (and I assume you mean the colorful one in the area with the white rug?) into account and I can't see how these two areas relate, but if they adjoin, and if the dining then also adjoins, I'd be inclined to go with the blue trellis because it is a bit more subdued, while certainly NOT a vanilla choice. But it would provide some breathing room between the areas, and allow your colorful chair to not "fight" with your nearby colorful rug and then proceed to your more striking rug in the dining area. But this is very dependent on the arrangement/flow of one area to the other visually. And now, I find myself wondering what yellow rug with blue might look like in there ...

Luv Romantic - yes, they do both work and give entirely different feel to the room.

Here's a little test you can do.......place the two rugs near each other, slightly apart but where you can see both at the same time as you enter the room. They may need to be folded in half or partially rolled, so you can see the pattern and also see the room behind them. Leave them there before you go to bed at night. When you come into the space in the morning, watch yourself to see which one you respond to or are drawn to immediately. That one will be the best for you in this location.

You have a gift, I really admire your design eye!

Put me on the list on the blue trellis side. When I look at the multi colour rug my eyes kind of relax, switch to the trellis and my eyes wake up and I get a feeling like "Ah, honey I'm home!". I can't wait to see which one you choose. And I'm looking forward to seeing your dining room when it's done.

I just went back and looked at the pictures. One thing is for sure, the trellis rug make the blue/teal/turquoise chair pop and makes the other things almost invisible. The multi coloured one brings all the other colours alive and everything in the room becomes visible.

I'm sitting here totally empathizing with you. Hard, hard decision. Good luck.

@Ann my dining table is a 42 inch tulip like table, and the angle of the four chairs pull out on the length of the rug and not on the width.
@lessimore thank you so much for the compliment! As for the room configuration it is just one long room so the picture is of the front end and the dining room is the other. I do have a room divider up. But I keep taking it down...because that what I do. Aaagh! :)
@lessimore Oh and I would have loved a yellow one but I cannot find any in my budget that don't clash with the yellow/mustard chairs.
@catieb thank you much for the design eye comment considering you are a pro and all. :) I think I will try your idea.
@Suzanna Sebesteny. You really helped me in your first paragraph-then I got to the second one and you really confused me again. Stop that. :)

For you the colorful one is perfect. Blue trellis is a little too predictable and you seem to be far from predictable. The colorful one brings the two halves of the room together better.

My job is done then :-)

catieb has a great idea. I'm sure you'll let us know how it seems to you in the morning. What a great idea. In the past I've always "slept on" any decisions I had to make, and it always worked. catieb's idea takes that one step beyond. Have fun.

@lessimore, Oh and the fireplace and two chairs are located in a 5' recess in the wall across from and to the right of the couch.

Your space is so fun! I love the colorful one for a funky look, the blue if you want more traditional (which I'm guessing you don't!) Let your funk flag fly!!!

For those who wanted to see how the fireplace wall related to the wall with the couch.

See there is a corner of the living room with a 5 foot, more or less, recess.

I like both rugs, and love your colorful eclectic space! It sounds like you are going to keep both rugs and use them in separate spaces that are open to each other? I would flip a coin to decide, and then every few months (when I do a deep, thorough house cleaning), I would switch them and maybe do a little rearranging of some of the accessories as well. That might sound crazy, but I'm always looking for ways to keep rooms looking fresh and interesting.

I prefer the rug with some red in it- especially because you have red in the chair over by the fluffy white rug.

@sustainable dwelllings Not for the people living here. :)

@everyone else thanks so much for all your feed back. It is really helping me decide.

@msbernards, I am just crazy enough to do that and no matter which one I pick, that will probably be what I end up doing.

As for now I switched it back to the trellis in the living room and colorful in the dining room. as the dining area is basically all cream and the colorful one hides and holds up to spills better. But who knows what I will do in a month or two...or tomorrow! ;)

    Thanks all!

Hey Luv Romantic! I just now saw your discussion so I am late to the party. That is a normal thing for me though. :) I am going to start following you on here so I can see when you do something new.

Even though my decorating style is not like yours, I LOVE your style. It's so interesting & comfortable!

I love both rugs. I wanted to say use the colorful one so it balances the colorful chair by the fireplace. Then you say that your dining room is also part of the flow of this room & needs color. So with that in mind, my choice is use the blue one in the living room & the colorful one in the dining room. That's also a good thought about the colorful one hiding stains in dining mishaps. So there you go, my 2 cents worth of opinion.

And by the way, I really like Anne's inspiration picture above. (Way to go Anne!) I would have believed it if you said that's a picture of another room of your place. It just looks like your style. What's cool about all the artwork is that you can just start adding a piece at a time to what you already have.

I think a lot of people don't get that having so many different things around you is comfortable to you. You are probably attached to everything & could tell a story about when & where you got each thing. The memories of it makes it comfortable. It's like being hugged by your room. Even though my style is different, I am the same way about the things in my home. I picked them up over the years & I can remember where they all came from. My rooms are always a work in progress. Some people get overloaded by that type of thing & need their homes to be simpler & finished all at once. I understand that too.

To borrow a line from Miranda Lambert, "To keep the world spinning, it takes all kinds of kinds."

@chrisinky, Thanks so much for your input! I am like you, although I am very eclectic, that does not mean I cannot appreciate other styles in other homes. I just gravitate to color in my own home. :) And thanks for your decorating encouragement. Not a Pro but I know what I and my three girls like.

I'm so disappointed you didn't go with the multi-colored rug. The trellis is so boring to me. But you have great taste & a very artistic eye, so if you are happy, I'll be happy for you. Here's another rug I love:

i love the colorful rug.....but the blue and white trellis looks better in your room. i say do the blue and white and bring color in with pillows like the one on the chair. when i look at the picture with the colorful rug i notice that then all the other items. when i look at the picture with the blue and white rug my eye easily flows across the room.

I love the rug with all the colors, more exciting and brings the whole room together. The two colored rug is too boring for this room. The fireplace sitting area is lovely. You do have a great since of putting odd things together and making them look beautiful.

Hi Luv Romantic, I really do like the colorful rug with the red in it. The blue trellis is very nice but a little pedestrian, used too often. I think it is too safe for you.

did I miss your decision? the last two superimposed don't work there, but you said you are just looking at colors, right? I still think the circle rug works best because besides pulling in all the colors, the curves work with the coffee table, lines of your couch and chairs, and even flower cushions. to me, anything geometric or striped doesn't work.
    last modified: 13 years ago
@Sydney Austin, the two super imposed rugs I am looking at maybe for my dining area and keeping the colorful one in my living room. Returning the blue trellis. But so far I also do not think any of them work with my colors. They were superimposed in the living room because I don't have pictures available for my dining area.
Oh and so far I am going with the Trellis in the LR unless I can find one for the dining area. Then I would put the more colorful one in the LR. As it stands the colorful one stands up better to spills and such.
I think you should get rid of the white one.The blue one is adding a spark to the room but yeah it would have been better if it would've been of a bigger size maybe :/ Your room looks great :- that's what i personally feel,I like everything except the white rug. It's way too boring ! And seems to be the least suitable for this room. :)
