That isn't Radicchio at all, though it probably is edible. The mystery is what is it?

Lol I have been wondering. The tag from the nursery said Radicchio but I'm new to vegetable gardening so if it was misplaced I wouldn't be able to tell. I kept thinking maybe it will look more like radicchio as it's matures? I guess I'll swing by the nursery and see if they can ID it. To me that looks like Chicory, of which Radiccio is just one cultivated form. Sometimes you get throwbacks to the wilder forms. If you tear a leaf and you see white sap that would confirm. Did all the seeds produce similar plants? All parts of all Chicories are edible, but not necessarily palatable. Old leaves and stems can be fibrous and bitter.

Looks like a chicory to me as well. Some years back I grew a mix of chicories from Pinetree and one of the hardiest looked like that.

You can chop it up and use it in cooking too - the bitterness seems to fade when it's cooked. My fave thing to do with those greens was a salad of chopped greens, mini sweet peppers, walnuts, feta and lemon juice. The sweetness of the peppers balanced out the bitter greens.

We eat chicory lightly boiled for a few minutes then drained and sautéed with garlic. I grow Cicoria selvetica da campo from Franchi seed, one of the easiest vegetables I’ve ever grown.
