Old porch joists parallel to house

We had our two story porch partially rebuilt on our 1915 New England home, due to rot in one of the original posts. I was surprised to see that the original joists ran parallwel to the house, instead of perpendicular. The contractor said he didn’t know why it had been done that way but that in his experience it was common among homes of this vintage.

Have you seen this? Do you have any idea why porches would have been built this way? Structurally it makes no sense to me.
