Automatic litter boxes

I remember there was a thread about litter bags and in it several mentioned the automatic litter boxes. I'm currently considering if I should invest in one. I'm a little worried about our "scaredy" cats not taking to it, however it would be really nice if they did and I could go away for a few days and feel confident they will have nice clean litter as I'm the litter scooper in the family and the others aren't stellar at covering the job when I'm gone.

Which one do you have and what do you like and dislike most about it? I've read online reviews, but as so many others here I highly value ya'lls opinions.

I had one maybe 15 years ago. It worked fine although it would have been...uh...cleaner with regular maintenance.

To train the cats, you just don't turn it on for a few days while they get used to it. There is a delay so the cat will have left the premises before the cleaning occurs. Not sure how well that works with multicat. I guess they could be startled if they come in at the right time.

Of course, I've known some cats to get vengeful about things they didn't like. I'm sure you know that you can't predict how well anything sits with a particular cat, even if you think you know that cat.

I don’t know about these, but two of my kids trained their cats to use the toilet! They bought the toilet trainers online, spent a couple weeks training the cats, and are living happily ever after never having to deal with litter boxes. There is absolutely nothing gross about it and the cats never miss.

@Fori - that makes sense to not have it on to start with. I think they would be ok as they don't go one after the other and seem to have their own schedule. It would just be in the same room where their food is too which might scare them off, but hopefully they won't associate it with that.

Do you have one and if so what kind?

@sheesh - we tried that with our first one, but she played with the water and she ended up getting sick from it so we had to institute a no toilet lids open at our house as it was touch and go there for a little bit with her until we got the right antibiotics.

Just did an A* purchase search...it was a "Littermaid LM700" purchased in 2009. We didn't have it very long because something happened to the cat. :(

I bet they are much better now, but it was still pretty okay!

I bought three of these and do NOT recommend unless your cat has rock hard excrement. It was a mess. We threw them away and went back to scooping.

My renter spent $650 + steps to buy one like the litter robot. The tines got stuck in all the loose poo...and it was a HUGE mess. The poo ended up on the carpeted floor. I saw it opened up...the tines were dripping with poo all stuck in it.....
