Buying old but like new washer

Looking at buying an older model but like new outta the box washer, if anyone knows exactly how old it is/have it themselves and can let me know if its a good buy

LG is now considered among the most reliable frontloader brands.

Appliance411 has a model/serial date decoder. Serials are coded for the date of manufacture which is more properly relevant for the machine's age, usually year and month (Whirlpool is year and week of the year). Date coding (both model and serial) repeats on a varying cycle depending on the manufacturer (typically between 10 and 20 years) so it's sometimes necessary to consider factors such as aesthetic appearance and mechanical design to pinpoint the age, for example 2008 vs. 2018 or 2000 vs. 2020.

Models are coded for the year of market introduction, which a given model may be produced for more than one year. My mother has a Whirlpool wall oven with model coding of 1995 and serial coding of 2005, which is the longest production period I've thus far seen.

Yea I should have spent more than 5 minutes googling, I found the age and other stuff on here https://homespy.io/decoded/004KWDJ00561 but now I'm not sure cause I've read stuff about shoddy LG appliances from years ago. Good memory though you were right on

Even with a steep discount, would it make sense to buy a washer produced, perhaps 13 years ago? There wouldn't be any warranty on it, would there? LG models have changed and improved since then and the least-expensive front loader is $800.

It'd be from a family friend, $200 free and clear. I also went ahead did the deal already so what will be will be haha

That serial starts with 004. On this LG format, the first 0 is a year code that repeats every ten years, and 04 is April. So the serial by itself can mean April 2010 or April 2020. The model points strongly to 2010. WM2050CW appears in a California appliance record from 2009 and a US market filing from 2010, well before 2020. I checked the pair with Appliage, the free appliance age finder I built. I see you just made a similar post at the automaticwasher.org site. I'm copying the response by Dadoes who is the moderator for that site and who often posts here (and in fact replied 3 years ago to the original post in this thread.)

AI inquiries are often wrong for those eras when it tries to reverse-track current coding that has changed since those times. Some brands are missing ... Well, this is curious: Houzz just assigned me a new profile and replaced my "jwvideo" user name with the "HU-69602847" moniker. Am trying to restore it to jwvideo. We will have to see if this works.

Yes, that was me. Thanks for bringing Dadoes's note over. His point about vintage machines is fair. Appliage does not cover the 1969 or 1970 Maytag formats, and it should not apply a newer code to them. The current version covers Speed Queen from 1995 forward. Westinghouse only gets guidance, while Norge and Fisher & Paykel are not supported yet.

For the LG in this thread, the 2010 result comes from the serial code plus the California appliance registry and a U.S. market filing for WM2050CW. I appreciate the careful check.
