Ficus benjamin and root pruning: practical tips

last modified: 3 years ago

Dear @tapla (mid-Michigan, USDA z5b-6a), I bought this ficus Benjamin 2 years ago (in another discussion or if you prefer in this I will ask you how to prune it) and I think it was in a medium with a lot of coconut fiber. A year ago I just put it in a bigger pot with some higher quality soil. However, the old soil remained and the water was difficult to get down when I watered. A month ago I took the plant out of the pot and I removed a lot of the coir that was on the surface and the expanded clay on the bottom as you can see in the last photo. I took some photos to ask you if I should prune the roots: it would be my first time.
