Hi everyone,

My husband and I are trying to figure out what style and colour windows and doors (new flush casement) would look best on our house / garage (which include a side window and door) and old stable (due to be renovated into an anex). We would really appreciate some ideas please.

Originally we were aiming to keep a traditional classic feel to the house. However, over past 4 years many modern houses have been built close up to us and we now think a more modern feel would be more appropriate for it.

The old stables will have either French doors or bifold doors at the front on the left side. The upper hay loft door is planed to be switched to a window (as upstairs light source is needed due to no planning permission for rear window).

The current main houses honey wood style PVC isn’t to our taste. The main house and garage brick work is orange with dark bluey grey areas. The orange seems to make it difficult.

The old stables brick i think has a slightly softer orange tone to the brick with yellow / cream (rather than the bluey/grey. My husband is keen to keep this traditional brick work.

We’re struggling to pick colours / style that go with the bricks.

Ideas we’re looking at (but open to any ideas)

1. White for all windows, but coloured doors.
2. White for all windows, coloured doors (but white door frames)
3. One colour across all windows and doors (none white)

The Colours we have debated: Anthracite grey, Agate grey, pebble grey, sage (although there is an issue in us trying to get composite doors in this colour).

We both think Anthracite grey may be too oppressive directly against the orange brick. However, we have seen houses use a white frame with the coloured doors - perhaps this helps or is this just done to reduce cost?

Additionally (to explain the full situation) I really don’t like the brick arch at the main house entrance (husband convinced me we could change it easily. Originally my thought was to make the current porch part of the house (taking down the two side walls or the porch), bring light into the very dark hall using glass panels either side of the door). Then place a large oak arch porch in front. This job is trickier (costly) than we thought as the electric box and meter is situated on / the left wall of the porch and the gas meter is close to there too. I think it’s worth doing but perhaps there are other options?
