I would like to put a smaller/mid-size frame TV on the wall. We do have a den downstairs for movies and such. We can change up the layout with the furniture if need be. Still trying to figure out what style of armchair to add.

I just saw your comment about the tv. Hmmm...I guess you could add it where the chair is and put the chair on the otherside.

It will kind of have to go over the couch. The chair in the photo is a recliner so you can just as easily watch tv from a chair as a couch. I’m contemplating a gallery wall over the couch…or maybe just a larger frame TV.

Does the color of the chair need to kind of match the color of the other chair (which is a very dee navy blue)?

Is this your main living room? How many people are in your house? It seems odd to me to have a TV hanging over a sofa that only 2 people in chairs can see. Do you really need a TV in this room?

Can you post another picture from standing in front of the window looking into the space? What rooms are next to and/or open to this room?

Does the couch fit in front of the windows?

It is the “formal” living room. There is a Rec room/den downstairs. We usually watch tv and movies down there. This would probably just be for my kid to watch cartoons and when we have guests staying downstairs. Photo looking the opposite direction/away from the windows.

There is my husband, myself and our child. And yes, the couch would fit in front of the windows as well.

If you plan to have TV there, I would go with coach by the railing and TV on the wall instead wall art, turning layout on 180 degrees.

Yes could do that. The layout of the living room can definitely shift which I like. I also want it to be a frame tv so it just looks like art. Overall this is mostly an area where we do puzzles, drink coffee and visit with friends.

Is a rug like this too busy?

First an area rug would make a huge difference. A TV could go sitting on top of a credenza along the stair rail. I've seen it done in a few homes and it works.

ditch the tv. layout looks great, add a couple side tables, maybe a coffee table. Appropriately-sized area rug that spans under both the sofa and chair. Tall potted plant.

This rug in the photo has been moved a bit so that the front legs of everything is on it. It is 8x11. 9 x 12 would be super long. Maybe I actually need a square rug? Like 11x11…. Just not 100% on the style of the rug….

I realize I am coming late to the thread but if it were my space I'd put the sofa facing the window with a good console table behind it, and then 2 chairs facing the sofa. If there is nothing to see out the window, I'd put the tripod floor lamp between the chairs.

I'd put a low bookcase against the wall wall with art over it (maybe even a tapestry piece) and do a good light fixture from the ceiling.

By turning the sofa to face the window you would create the definition of a room and lose the feeling of an airport lounge. I can't tell but it looks to me like you'd have comfortable walking clearance to enter the space with the sofa facing the window. I would put a substantial console behind it.

I would favor a tapestry on the wall even if it seems retro because there's not enough distance to take in a painting, and a tapestry would look nice with your rug and leather

If the sheers are always going to be shut, you could also consider putting the sofa with it's back in front of the window

It's a nice room - bright and cheerful. Would suggest you examine your own style (modern, Scandi or whatever that might be). Once determined you should be able to search the internet for inspiration photos that will help guide you. Good luck!

I would skip the tv on the wall and do artwork. Get your son an iPad to watch tv on instead.

I like the 2nd rug much better than the 1st one (I don't care for center medallions), but you don't seem too enthused about either one. Perhaps you could look for a more contemporary/modern style?

So move your sofa in front of the window, get 1 or 2 navajo-style or similar blankets to put over the railing, get those rugs and arange the remainder of the furniture accordingly. Put a bookcase and tv on the empty wall.

Have you considered using a white, plush shag or a sheepskin rug? I don't know that I would use a rectangular shaped rug, since it would just emphasize the long, narrow shape of the room. Your floors are beautiful and it would be a shame to cover them with a large area rug. Maybe use a round or oblong shaped coffe table. And consider using a Navajo design tapestry/rug that has some navy blue, red, cream in it, hung on the wall behind the sofa to add some interest to bring the eye upward and break up the blank wall.

If you gravitate toward geometric designs, do look at old or new Turkish flat weaves. Careful about layering over a jute, that is a trip hazard. A sisal will be better suited.

Sorry I didn't realize your style was in this direction but I think the instinct to layer fibers and varigated textures into this space is the right one. Tapestries no, but ethnic designs, si.

I also think giving the sofa sitters a view of something other than the stairwell is a better direction.

Just for an update, still haven’t finished the rug hunt. I have a braided grass rug there now but still hoping to find the perfect rug to layer.

Need a different coffee table and there is a new chair to replace the ikea chair soon. Still needs some more color/texture. The jute is the exact same color as the flooring!

The picture above the couch is the Samsung frame tv. We did re-orient the living room but for now this is the layout that suits us best (and is safest for our 5 year old).

The room looks serene and peaceful with that rug. The only thing I would change are the window treatments. They look rather skimpy. Can you get two more of the same panels to add more fullness?
