I love the cedar siding and the color of it. The trim looks good the color it is too. I would redo it exactly the same, if it needs doing. In your woodsy location, a cedar house fits right in and looks like it belongs there.

I'd consider a grey about like tree bark in the surrounding forest, not too much blue in it. If the house is stained, stay with stain. Then do the garage doors and trim a shade or two darker. Then the house will blend in so the scenery can be the star. Love the house & the setting. Maybe some judicious clearing behind the house to open up the view from downstairs.

I agree that the colors are beautiful as is! In fact, your house looks so on-trend, I would have thought it was built in the last couple of years. I would absolutely not touch the trim (looks like SW black fox maybe?) or the cedar stain in the soffit areas (should be in better shape than elsewhere). It is very up-to-date and upscale to have cedar in soffit areas, no matter what the color elsewhere, as shown in the first pictures on these websites and discussed on the last site:

If you are just tired of the orange tone everywhere and really want to change it, you could restain with a semi-transparent stain that has a slightly more brown tone to it. See the wood in the last Before and After on this page:

We restained our cedar-stained house in the late 90’s to get rid of the orange by using a taupey-brown solid stain and it definitely updated it — cedar was not as trendy then as it is now. But ours was cedar-colored rough T111 that never looked as good as yours, and we had burgundy brick to work around to boot.

Another option if you want a complete color change is to use a green-grey stain for the siding (still leaving trim and soffits as is). I’m looking at a paint chip of Benjamin Moore Night Train and thinking that would look great, and still in keeping with the woodsy setting. See pictures right above and below #6 on this page for examples of green with brown-black or black trim (though they may be too dark, and the green one in #12 is definitely too dark for your shaded setting):

By the way, absolutely ignore the other trends on that page and DO NOT paint your house white or black, or anything close to it!!! It would ruin it (though that doesn’t seem to stop lots of other folks with 70’s and 80’s contemporaries!). Not too light, not too dark, so your trim can still provide accent without being too contrasty. Stick to woodsy colors (no blues, cold greys, or navy)..

Stain lots of sample boards and use online visualizers, because once you change the color, you won’t be able to go back. Look at sample boards in all lighting — I tested our taupey-brown on the east-facing garage doors and thus didn’t realize how mauve it went in the afternoon sun!

Love it, Leave it. Invest in some landscaping instead of painting.

Exterior could benefit from more lighting. I like this affordable exterior wall light from amazon. Yes, it seems Modern, but minimalist, I'm think it would work for your great house, spreading light over the surfaces.

Gorgeous setting for a gorgeous house! I’m glad you mentioned no natural wood shows through, because I thought I saw some knots and woodgrain and was going to point out that putting solid stain over it would obscure all the wood and make it look like any other siding (vinyl, metal, etc.).

I don’t know what the greens were that Brick and Batten used — you’d have to contact them. But they do review a lot of colors on their blog, so you might want to scroll through or do a search. In fact, they have an article about different greens they like to use here:

I would encourage you to leave some of the house the cedar color (soffits definitely, but also some appropriate vertical areas) while updating the rest with the green-greys. That’s a very popular look and more interesting than all one color. Search for Cedar and Green Exteriors (or Rustic Cedar and Green exteriors) to see some examples. Here’s a couple I found doing that (tried to pick ones that also have dark brown trim):

In the last one, notice they just painted the bargeboards green, while the garage door and window/door trim is a dark brown-black like yours. That alone might update your house, since the brown and orange everywhere isn’t as fresh-looking.

I have a bunch of paint chips here since I’m looking at colors for my own house, and the grey-green ones that look like they would work for your house are Sherwin Williams Mountain Road, Retreat, Attitude Gray. Anonymous was mentioned in the Brick and Batten article, but it looks more brown to me and not as fresh as the others. I already mentioned Benjamin Moore Night Train (one shade lighter is Stonybrook). There are bloggers who compare colors and show examples, and Benjamin Moore at least has full pages on each of their colors, so Google is your friend when it comes to finding more examples! If you just have to change it, I'd try to go in the green direction. But, if it were me, I'd keep what you have. It's so right. Lovely home.

Just ran across some drive-by photos I took on a nearby road June 30, of some houses currently under construction. Every one of them either dark grey or green with cedar accents!

I like the suggested 0304 New Residence greenish thyme colour shown above and the Silver Sunshine mixture too. Much more modern than what you have now IMO.
