I have a 10" tall undermounted kitchen sink and a 12" tall undermounted laundry sink with disposals. The counters are 36" high.

It might or might not be true for your daughter's particular set-up. Maybe get a second opinion from a plumber?

i enedd up hiring this person to install all the cabinets and he included reinstalling all plumbing and fixtures which included garbage disposal, fridge, dW, etc

we really dont want tohire another person to do another job just to put in a disposal when the contractor should be able to... especially since he is charging $$$$ for a 10x10 kitchen

i dont know if he is trying to get more money out of us . :-/

We had a ground floor condo where the waste line was too high for the disposal to work properly. I didn't reinstall one, as I don't like them anyway.

You may have to relocate the waste arm lower on the stack to do that. It's not a big deal for the plumber to do, if he has access room. If you've already installed the cabinets, then you likely need a shallower sink. There are plenty of single bowl sinks out there. Look for an ADA model.

^^agree with what @DeWayne and @latifolia wrote. The issue is the height where the waste pipe is located under the sink. That pipe needs to be lower than where the disposal drains so that gravity can work. There is a disposal by Insinkerstor called a ”compact” model. It might save you an inch or so. Show that model’s specs to the plumber and ask if that model will work with your waste pipe. The many single bowl sinks that are 9” - idk why your plumber is saying that only a 1/2” more than the old one won’t work - that is fishy. Look at Kraus for single bowl 9” deep sink. Combine that with a compact model disposal and you should be set.

Or have the plumber move the waste pipe down. This is commonly done, and if this plumber won’t do it, get another plumber who will - he’ll probably be a better plumber than your current one anyway.

there is always resale value to consider- would prefer the deeper sink - my struggle is to find something that is 28-29 wide and 8-9 deep: i have also considered going back tto a topmount- all this would not be a big deal if i could work around the disposal :

This one is 26 1/2" wide so it's a little smaller than you want but it's 8" deep.

@Coffee Mama I feel like you did not read my comment. I made a rec for a compact disposal along with a link to it. I also recommended a Kraus sink with 9” depth. I also said I cannot see why a HALF INCH difference from the previous sink could be a problem.

@Beatrix’s rec above for an Elkay sink is also good.

No home buyer ever said ”the kitchen sink is 8-9”, I’m not buying this house!” I still don’t get why you say you can’t find a 9” deep sink.

Hey Miranda- you are right I do not see your post and i missed your advice! im new to posting here so please bear with me as i navigate the tech world :-D

after a whole of time i did find a couple of 9in deep sinks thyat are topmount but the undermounts area bit tougher-

when i mentioned resale value i was referring to a ada size sink which is usually 5in or so deep

Start with an Insinkerator Compact disposal. 6" from the flange to the center of the drain, about the smallest there is. Unzip the back of the cabinet/wall and determine if the drain line is vertical or horizontal. It may be possible.

Your contractor might have some basic plumbing knowledge, but isn't a plumber.

I don't understand why you wouldn't pay a plumber a few hundred dollars to get the result you want?

Joseph Corlett , I recommended that compact disposal twice to the OP and provided a link to it too. I don’t think she understands about it, but perhaps she’ll show it to her plumber.

Or maybe learn to live without sennding all your garbage to the waste treatment place and make a trip to recycling once a week I really dislike disposals obviously.
