Talk to your painter. They can probably topcoat it with a satin or matte polyurethane (or something compatible with the paint they used) that will knock down the sheen. Another possibility, depending on what the paint is, it might be possible to "brush" the finish like they do on "satin" black lacquered pieces like pianos.

It's not a big job and it's not time sensitive. You can deal with it later! If your carpet goes in before you decide, it shouldn't be a problem because a good painter will protect that carpet. Don't let it worry you and don't rush yourself. Sounds like you need a break!

I tried to capture the post in particular that the lighting really accentuates the grain in the wood with the sheen. Again the painter used an oil based high gloss and said it would be easy to care for and clean but I’m thinking that makes it more challenging to paint over.

Here’s that same upper post with morning light and it’s not sunny out. Do you think if I just had them repaint the posts only in a satin or semi gloss finish leaving the railing high gloss that it would look ok?

Carpet is scheduled to be installed tomorrow so I need to decide asap if I will delay the carpet and try to fix this.
