How to make this bedroom tie in better?

last modified: 2 years ago

Something about this bedroom feels off to me but I'm not sure what it is. We are planning on adding wallpaper to the wall that the bed is against (the bed is not yet centered to the wall so please ignore that).

Should we continue with the wallpaper or just paint that wall with an accent color and perhaps use the wallpaper elsewhere?

What would you add or remove in general?

The bed frame is a dark green, what other colors should I try to add to the room if any?

On my screen the bed looks bronze rather than black, and if so, if it was too late to get black, I would load up the bed with faux mink bedding and bronze silk or something like that.

I'd do pendants over the night tables rather than table lamps.

If a celing fan was an absolute must, I'd get something hyper-modern, but I'd actuall prefer some other kind of fixture.

Might float the bed on its own black rug or bronze-y rug.

I think the most striking thing in the room is the drapes. If there was a wild wildpaper of gingko leaves in those pearlescent tones, that would be interesting.

I actually do like high drama wallpaper and rooms and not afraid of the dark but this particular wallpaper is a little nightmarish in feeling to me. Puts me in mind of Goya's Sleep of Reason, if you know the work.

It's to me, ( sorry ) a bit overly gray/black and somber. I have absolutely nothing against dark bedrooms, I do them!. They can indeed be sexy, soothing and womb like, but.....they do need some contrast, gleam, some decoration. What's above the bed...the black rectangle?!

More this......and if you want a feature wall? Make it one, but go fro broke and tine the rest of the painted walls to the background.

The bedding ? Don't let it put the room to sleep. More contrast....Some LIGHT on there.

Real lamps that give you light : )

(How about continuing the drapes all the way around the room?)

    I'd add some color.

I am a big fan of dark moody bedrooms! This is the first time trying to create one myself though. I like the idea of painting all the walls the same dark color as the wallpaper. I am also okay with skipping the wallpaper in this room and just doing paint.

Since the bed is a dark green, what other color should I try to introduce? I also feel like it is lacking some color. Should I keep the bedding duvet & shams black or go with something else?

    last modified: 2 years ago

If you want to skip the wallpaper, I would paint the walls very dark eggplant. I like Behr Black Sapphire.

The wall paper is beautiful but not the right scale for the room with ceilings that low. I'd paint a dark copper or dark eggplant. Do all the walls, not just one accent. Your bed is beautiful. Your bedding might work. I'd tuck in the sides and bottom of the duvet. It is currently covering up your beautifully upholstered footboard.

Sorry I missed the frame is green.

and here is some F&B wallpaper called Hellebores

but I think the floppy botanical look fights the channels of your bed

Howeever, that jewel-tone peacock might be great bit of accent color for the room if you stick with green and black most everywhere else.

Not sure if what you’re sensing as something being off is the same as my thinking that this room is begging for some real lamps, cozy bedding, right side out curtains, and some organic elements, but that’s what I’d suggest. Dark and moody works if there’s organic elements, different textures and colors, and interesting patinas. Here..maybe this link will help…https://whiteoakandlinen.com/2022/01/10-beautiful-dark-moody-bedrooms/
While the wallpaper is beautiful, it needs a full wall like the inspiration photos, not one with a black box in the middle of it. Maybe it could work on another wall somewhere else in your home.

What is that giant thing up high over the bed -- a return register? Because that really hampers your options with art, and I think it would interrupt your wallpaper in a jarring way as well. Can you get a white register cover to make it less visible?

Two main things jump out to me:

    (1) Lack of contrast -- all your furniture and bedding are very dark, and it just becomes a dark silhouette. Try getting some accent pillows that pick up the lighter tones of your carpet, at least, or introduce some color (other than black and brown). I'd avoid adding dark paint and wallpaper, in favor of maybe several small prints above the headboard.

12x20 Soft Cotton Dhurrie Accent Lumbar Throw Pillow-Set of 2-Gray-White · More Info

    (2) Your bedside lamps are way too small -- they need to be tall enough that you could, in theory, read a book by their light while seated in bed. Maybe the low ones can be put on either end of your long dresser for when you want a bit of ambient lighting. Lamps can go a lot of directions, but it might be nice to echo the silver of the curtains, if they're staying...

You might like to read this article on "darkly romantic" style: https://www.houzz.com/magazine/so-your-style-is-darkly-romantic-stsetivw-vs~5422789

And there are some really good articles in this thread on a whole-house color scheme: https://www.houzz.com/discussions/6392803/great-how-to-articles-on-whole-house-color-schemes

In any room, it helps to have a mix of dark/light, dull/bright, an a mixture of textures. In a dark room, highly reflective surfaces like glass, mirrors, metals add depth and mystery. Velvets and satins are special, because their reflectiveness can be seen rather than drowned out.

In any room, identifying one or more focal points and then using your colors and surfaces to stage them is helpful. In a bedroom, one focal point is the bed. In any room, the eye is naturally drawn to any light color like white, and to bright colors. In your room as is, the eye is drawn to the light walls and draperies. I'm not saying you have to give up your beautiful wish-I-had-one-just-like-it dark green bed. You just have to stage it by adding touches of white and bright.

I do think it would be great to get dark walls in there. I think your wallpaper is beautiful. You don't have to wallpaper everything, but you could. All walls, or paint walls and paper the ceiling, or the ceiling and one wall. So many choices.

@acm makes a good point that the register is a challenge that you need to address. Be ready to camouflage it by painting it whatever color is in your wallpaper. You also need a distraction.White objects on and around the bed can help. I'm wondering if lamps are just too boring for what you are trying to do, and what you'd really like are dramatic hanging lights.

Your bedding...what color is that? Black or dark blue? Are you also attached to it? Fine if you are but I just need to know if it's blue or black. Next, what colors are in your draperies? Is that silver or white? And the dark ribbon... is that black or navy? You know I think you need some white here to draw attention. The modern way to "dress" a bed offers lots of opportunities. Start with showing off the bed frame with contrast between it and high quality bright white sheets. Fold back your duvet. Buy pillows for your bed according to whatever is appropriate for your bed size: queen or king? You have a pillowcase in the duvet fabric. White is a second color. Choose the third after figuring out your color scheme but make it a bright mid-value color. "Value" is light vs dark. Later you can add a throw. I think a white faux fur throw would be the right lux mood.

So, let's say the duvet and dark color in the draperies is black or really dark grey. And the other color is silver or pale grey. One color scheme you could go to is what I like to call "evergreen mountain in winter". It has evergreen (bed frame), stone (duvet and dark stripe in draperies), and multiple shades of winter-cloud-grey (draperies), and snow white (my suggested add-ons). You could build on that and enhance your dark room with your wallpaper and a paint that matches the background. You could replace your nightstands with mirrored chrome ones. There are all sorts. Add a pair of pendants and you've framed your bed so nobody will notice that register when it's painted the dark color. You've also repeated what I think is silvery white in your draperies. I could be off and need color-correcting by you.

If you are in love with your nightstands and dresser, by all means forget the chime ones. But add something in chrome like a set of picture frames or a mirror. Look for opportunities but don't just add junk. I also can't tell what color your nightstands and dresser are. Are they also dark green? 😁 And I can't tell what it is over top of the dresser. A mirror? Or tv? Either will look better with a dark wall behind it.

Ok, so if you have dark green, maybe black or dark grey, silver maybe? And I am saying add white to draw attention to the bed while you have your dark wallpaper which also has white and will tie in with the white accents. I'm hoping you at least paint the ceiling the dark background of your wallpaper to camouflage the ceiling fan. Someday get a more contemporary fan but this one will do since you just want the air movement.

What you need now it to go to your whole house color scheme for that extra color you first asked about. You can stay all cold in this room if you want that effect, or you can choose a warm color and apply it in a small dose. Warm colors are reds, oranges, and yellows. A bit of wood would do the job if you want to emphasize the cold.

Let's say you want to stay cold. Maybe a touch of red-violet? Or cobalt blue? Or chartreuse? Whatever you choose, keep it bright, small, clear and un-muddied. Go here for ideas: https://www.artfulhome.com/navigate/sculpture

It would be rather surprising if your bedroom were the brightest room in the house. Bedrooms are often a place no matter how they are decorated are most celebrated with black out curtains. People prefer them dark for their function, so why not carry it through. I think it would be amazing to add shocking pink (or one of the colors mentioned above) something something to each room. Just one item but be sure it's something special.

I just realized you have realtor-beige wall-to-wall carpeting. I assume someday you want to ditch that for a satin finish dark wood or tile. How long do you have to wait? Can you do it now? Is there a bathroom attached to this bedroom?

This might be all the added color your room could handle and still hold the mood. WHOA a challenge : )!! The bed is loden! Who knew?

Since you got off on the wrong foot path....somewhere....?

If that's a niche above the bed and you painted it? Drywall OVER and be rid of it

Take a really strong paper ( etsy ) for backdrop.

The bed is CB2 , yes?

Tone in the bedding, silky and a change op from the velvet on the bed

    The rug.....shades of all

Lamps with a bit of sparkle on those dark bedside tables ( I MIGHT consider giving those a wash of metallic burnished silver paint. At any rate?

You created a real reach for yourself : ) Yank it together. The other three walls go the deep loden....or a shade in the leaves

I confess I think there are better night stands

    and rugs

The bed was the dictator, right? It ALWAYS is . It's the elephant in the room.

Or if you want to add a touch of purple try a velvet lotus pillow for your last color from earlier, a purple chair in the corner, and a purple sculpture on the dresser.

Or blue ottoman in corner, sculpture on dresser, pillow on bed.

I wanted to show that fabulous paper in various lighting for inspiration. I’d use it somehow, it’s a great design:

It makes a good ceiling treatment, too. It would be very striking with your walls painted a darker color.

I think it works better if you have some sort of trim or decorative molding, though, as in the ones below —

ETA: A couple of the ones I show are in blue, but still give an idea. It comes in lots of colors:

There is a definite lack of pattern in your bedroom and the colors that you have chosen for the bed cover and the furnishings make them disappear. The colors are just too somber and lack life and energy. Also, the bed and furnishings seem somewhat dated even though they may be new purchases.

Agree completely with Norwood Architects, but you spent some $$$$ on that CB2 bed. It did become the dictator.Scroll back up. : ) to my earlier post.

You can make it work. .......but when you choose things in isolation? There's a bit of a "price" to pay. In searches , or as Tim Gunn would say? "Make it work" or lose it. Adding other wildly different accents may not work, until you yank the core together.

No problem with the feature paper concept - your choice ? No.........please: )....just too somber.

Not saying it's the only way, but sometimes you make a decision and don't realize you DID

They're different, bed is same, yes?

And it would be yet a different scenario with pale oak case pieces, spice colors, some gilded lamps, a warm beige grass cloth on all four walls, and the curtains?? Bye bye.: ) I had to reach to save it ALLLLL sort of lol

Re: the thing above the bed … isn’t it a window with blinds on it? That’s how it looks when I enlarge it, but I may be wrong.

PS: I don’t agree that anything in your room looks dated. I like your retro style.

I have a different take on your room, in that the moody/casual/modern feel should be enhanced vs heading towards glam. Suggest this type of look (your curtains are perfect, but layer your bedding).

Skip the wallpaper, for lots of reasons, but choose the paint color last.

    https://christinamariablog.com/best-green-paint-colors/

With the money saved by not papering, accessorize! Start with a rug under the bed, which will have a huge impact.

    https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/1326136622/yellow-detail-green-rug-modern-pattern?epik=dj0yJnU9QVRFc2MtWUFzcUIxcUd1SzNib1RxSHdCQVNwX3FhRDkmcD0wJm49c0UzcXlCVm9xWk1JcUJtbG1veUtEZyZ0PUFBQUFBR1Q1dnJV&variation0=3650140695

Larger lamps for sure/or plug in sconses.

If you have a lot of empty wall space, add some art and even a full length mirror.

Thank you all so much for the feedback! I have really enjoyed reading it all and considering all the different ideas and suggestions you've all provided :) .

To answer some questions posed above - what is above the bedframe is a rectangular window that we covered up with a custom shade to black out the room for sleeping. We initially went with this color as we knew we would be painting or wallpapering that wall / room a similar color.

Curtain colors: Top bar (and base) is a dark charcoal gray, the rest is a white sheer fabric over the charcoal gray which makes it look like a lighter gray.

Dressers: Dark charcoal wood color from Arhaus. Probably will have to keep these and the carpet will likely stay for now as well.

I do love the idea of hanging pendants by the bedframe or wall sconces there. I am currently torn on whether to brighten up the bedding with whites as suggested or adding some warmth and coziness by keeping it dark and accessorizing with camel or tan colored accents such as faux fur throw/pillows and perhaps some organic woody elements.

As for the fans - we actually never use these. I would love to get rid of them. If I were to add pendants or sconces on the bed wall, would you just remove the ceiling fixture and leave that area empty or add a flush mount light?

There was mention of a color that is used throughout the rest of the house, I would say this could be the light camel/tan color. This is how the living area currently looks (not finished yet - still waiting on coffee table & have to plan out some other things in the room) but gives you an idea of how the other areas in the house are looking.

You should have a ceiling fixture switched from the door in the bedroom. In fact, where I live it is required by code if you do any upgrading of electrical. I think it's kind of an emergency thing. That doesn't mean you have to use it regularly, because ceiling lighting in a bedroom can be kind of harsh.

Honestly? The bedroom falls far short of the sensational rest: ) ! of the feel you have going.

You had a good start with the bed, IF you were willing to go with it! Some gleam, but not silver.....warmer. Doesn't mean you couldn't have had some black accents.

You could do a "frame" of wallpaper behind that headboard and literally fit a board to that window and paper RIGHT OVER IT. The window is ........sort of dumb and doubt you're raising and lowering the shade.

    Here's the great......big organic warm......

    It's MIA in the bedroom

I agree, since you want to add caramel tones as your "other color" tie in with gold for the gleam instead of silver, especially since your draperies are white over grey instead of silver.

Since your "other color" will be caramels, the beige carpet isnt quite so bad. 😏 In fact, it's a legitimate choice.

wow, that's an impressive little shade! I thought window, then saw how bright the day was outside the other window(s) and figured it must be a vent! :))

also, mind blown about the green bed. I saw this post first at night, and it was all black and brown on my evening monitor.

Since you say you don't love the ceiling fan, I would indeed think about the lighting options again. Think about your needs. Is it important to you to read in bed? I do but don't need a light to do it. Does the placement of the bed with regard to the placement of where a ceiling light would go suit the choice of a dramatic ceiling fixture. Do you want to draw attention to the whole bed or to the head of the bed? Think about your room proportions. Does the ceiling currently feel lower than you like? Or does it feel just fine? Are you seeking a low, spreading horizontal feeling? Does that feel peaceful to you? If so, then maybe wall lighting is better than a drawing attention to the ceiling. If you are seeking a low flat look, also paint the ceiling dark, and give the walls, the head of the bed, the window all the attention.

I don't recall reading if the thing over the dresser is a mirror or a TV.

I thought of your room color dilemma yesterday when I was looking at this peaceful view... the mix of green marsh grass, the marsh mud, the light grey horizon, and the beige inflorescence.

Thanks for sharing some other house photos…you have a beautiful home and it really helps us get a sense of your aesthetic and offer more informed advice. It seems natural for your bedroom to be dark and moody…so I would say paint the entire room…not black, but more espresso-like, sort of a mixture of black/brown/grey, but hopefully dark enough that the high shaded window blends in and goes away. Then light neutrals in the bedding. See the “moody bedroom inspiration” idea book (pillows) I made for you. Sometimes it’s easier to work backwards on bedding…Pillows, throws, comforter, then sheets. The lamps could be some sort of mottled metallic. And an area rug under the bed.

    last modified: 2 years ago

The ceiling in the bedroom is lower than the ceiling in the main living area. It does feel low to me and ideally I would like to make it appear higher. I would be open to adding wall sconces as opposed to ceiling pendants by the bed but I am not sure how the sconces would look with the window shade. Perhaps pendant would look better? For the color of the walls, I was thinking of something like Behr Cracked Pepper but am open to the idea of a more espresso shade.

As for what is on the dresser - this is a mounted TV and what is underneath is the surround sound board that sits on top of the dresser.

Thank you all again for the inspiration photos! Lots of great ideas here, just have to find all the right pieces and put it all together :)

I have some low ceilings and a collection of ideas to deal with illusions that help your particular room. One is to use wall sconces that shine light both up and down on the walls like at a movie theatre. You already did another with your floor to ceiling drapes with the contrasting dark stripe. Well done, you! Basically so far it's about creating vertical lines. Another strategy is to draw attention to the ceiling. You could use a showy light fixture with gold metal. The last more tricky strategy is to use an eye-catching ceiling treatment. One way is to have a bright color on ceiling and floor, making the eye go up and down. A variation of that is to make the ceiling and floor the same color beige to connect them in your brain. To make that color beige "exciting" haha... you have to make your walls dark...no problem right? You wanted to do that all along. I still love the wallpaper you first showed and hope you can use it. Then take it up a notch by using some style of crown moulding and extend it up and inward to steal some of the ceiling from the walls. The inside gets the beige treatment while the outside gets the wall treatment.

I've been wanting to show you this awhile. I think a chair in the corner between your dresser and drapes would be useful and nice-looking. With your wallpaper, wouldn't this chair in one of the many colors, be awesome? https://www.vertigohome.us/products/bloom-easy-armchair-by-kenneth-cobonpue?variant=31691848417361 Shop around for a good price.

I noticed one other commenter (Maureen?) also thinks your drapes are "perfect." Why not run wth success? Take the curtains all the way around to behind the bed, especially since you already need to block a window up there.

Then drop the pendants you want. Obviously they need to be special. How much money is in the budget? If you are saving money elsewhere by not papering or redoing the floors, I'll suggest Tempo Luxury Home pendants

    http://www.tempoluxuryhome.com/pendants-collections

You'll still need overhead lighting to replace that ceiling fan I think I'd go with a wide scattering of recessed LEDs on dimmers, or otherwise just find a wonderful descreet modern flushmount. One more option is to get the very biggest ceiling fan you can find, which might be decadently louche set on its slowest speed, ripping the curtains....

I'd call it quits after that except for the layers of bedding. They need to play up the green bed frame, probably by laying in many shades of gray and some more mossy green. Thinking faux gray wolf might be fun....

@mytwo cents I also love the idea of adding vertical emphasis at the headboard with draperies or a tapestry. I didn't mention it early on, because I thought it was a vent. Then I forgot about it. Great that you brought it up as an option again!

great -- I should add that the pendants I linked to are super expensive but maybe if the shapes appeal to you alternates can be found ...
