Water level is controlled by a pressure switch. Agitation should not occur (and the timer advance through an agitation wash or rinse period) until the target level is reached. Could be the water level/pressure switch is bad. The timer should not continue advancing through an Off section at the end of a given cycle into the next cycle but that depends on how the circuitry is designed. I vaguely recall mention that vintage Maytags would do that in some instances if the pressure switch went bad due the timer motor circuit making/breaking through the switch contacts.

Aww, armjim, that's unfortunate! With my SQ, I've not had that issue. Way back in time, I did have the mechanical timer replaced as it would not advance to extra rinse. This was when it was till under the 3 year warranty.

Based on what I have read, I am pretty confident it is the fill Mixing valve. It was pretty easy to get off, and cost me $41 wih tax from Amazon for a genuine Alliance OEM part. Apparently this thing is not very durable as they sure do have a lot of recent reviews for this-all positive. It should be here on Wednesday; should take me about 15 minutes to replace and get the machine back in place. dadoes, apparently when this solenoid goes bad it tricks the machine into thinking it is full of water but it also sends a signal that keeps the timer running. I'll report back as soon as I know if I fixed this thing.

ArmJim, I'm unable to grasp how a bad water inlet valve/solenoid can have that effect, particularly on a model without electronics that could get crossed-up via electrical signals gone off-spec. You didn't cite the model but you referenced an analog (mechanical) timer.

I found this help-discussion regards to the same problem you describe. The owner replaced the timer to no effect. The water level switch was the fault, stuck contacts which were released when the owner blew into the pressure switch. The help-guy advised to replace the pressure switch as it may stick again.

Speed Queen Washer Won't Fill and Won't Stop Running

dadoes this is killing me! So I looked at YouTube and then Amazon and went ahead and disassembled the control panel. Taking off the water level switch was easier than I thought; I went ahead and ordered that from Amazon. The water inlet solenoid will be here tomorrow and this switch on Thursday. I took lots of pictures with my camera before I took these things off so I can refer to them when I install the new parts. I blew into the tube on the water pressure switch and something clicks, but I guess I will go ahead and put the new one on. The inlet was pretty inexpensive, so since I have it off of the machine I will replace it with the new one. I have to say I am pretty disappointed in this, and will no longer quite rave about the Speed Queen. I have never had a washer needing a repair like this so early.

The click is the pressure mechanism in the switch engaging or releasing to actuate the appropriate pair of contacts, although blowing in it doesn't necessarily trigger stuck contacts to separate. The switch probably has three wires on it to complete a circuit from common to the water inlet valves for filling or common to the motor for agitation when the target level is reached. There should be continuity between the common and fill terminal when the tub is empty, between common and the motor-run terminal when the fill is satisfied. A multimeter is your friend for testing the switch. You're on your own to determine which contacts are for the two functions without a model number cited for research assistance. Perhaps there's a tech sheet on the machine with a wiring diagram.

The wiring diagram was inside the control panel in a cellophane bag. I will install the two devices and I hope that does it. If not we will be shopping for a new washer. Incidentally the model # is AWN432SP113TW04. That is the same as several of us have here-SEA SEA, I believe Cavimum, and myself.

dadoes, I replaced the water inlet valve this morning, put the hoses on (what a pain that was-very poor design of how the part is installed making it difficult to properly tighten the hot water connection), reinstalled the old water level switch (remember I had blown into it like in that blog) and the washer is working fine now. That part is supposed to arrive today, so I am going to go ahead and leave the control console as is and install the new part as well. At least for the time being I can get some clean underwear. I may tempt fate and try the adjustment of the washer filling with water to a higher level where I routinely reset it to. I remember you telling me it will affect all levels, but I am okay with that.

Glad to hear your washing machine is working now armjim. I was a little worried there for a day or so! Hoping you can adjust the water level to your liking too. I only use the reset water level function a couple times a year...when I do, I think of you and how you do that often. I think about this is not how I want to be spending my time right now.
