What brackets and where would they go? Personally the house above does not need brackets. I would be worried that there is too much going on already. All you will see is roof if the roof is truly going to be black tile.

What will the siding be, stucco? What color? I still say no to the brackets in any of the gables.

I would skip the braces up in the gables altogether.

You don't need to worry about this house looking "too farmhousey" without them. This is clearly Florida style house.

Thank you for the comments so far. I'm not worried about it looking farmhousey without the brackets. I was worried about wood brackets making it look a little farmhousey. I was going to skip the brackets in the gables, but my husband really wants them. He's so afraid of the house looking too plain.

I think brackets (wood or otherwise) with a metal roof does add a "farmhouse" vibe to an otherwise Florida style; as do the gable treatments. The photos that Beverly added look nice with the half Bermuda/Bahama shutters and seem more appropriate to the overall style of the house.

If the brackets are the only wood on the house, my fear is that it will look "stuck on" unless there are other wood elements throughout the design such as the front and garage doors and some around the porch.

They may end up looking like those Victorian gingerbread brackets people bought from catalogs in the 80s and stuck on regular houses. This is really not a good way to add "interest" to architecture. Would he put stickers or fake fins on his car because it's "too plain"?

The style of your house doesn’t need brackets. It’s Florida. So far, it looks very “Floridian” and the brackets may look like you were “over-designing” it. The examples from Beverly have a different architectural style where the brackets (many, many of them) are appropriate. Yours is different - and will be lovely without any brackets.

Metal ones, for sure, will be out of place.

Consult with the person that designed the house.

After seeing the inprogress pic no brackets on that house at all. IMO the fewer embellishments the better on a moden style house .

Get rid of the top gable pieces. The widows overhang bracket's should be black.

Gable brackets... but my husband really wants them. If this is the only thing DH really wants and you have free rein on all other decisions in the home design, get the gables. I say, pick your battles. You can always paint them the color of the body of the house later once you have landscaping and other areas of interest around the exterior. All the best to you on this journey!

The issue is, in reality, your house has very little space at the right gable. That will look cramped and adds nothing to the curb appeal. They did not build the house exactly as shown on the elevation.

It’s always hard when one spouse “really wants something” but has been easy going about other things. That still doesn’t make it right. We are talking about an architectural element that will not look good. Your decision on how to handle this, but there seems to be agreement that it is a mistake.

Sometimes showing a spouse this thread has helped convince them that “wanting” something and it being a good addition to your design are two different things.
