The Washington Post had an article on this a few days ago. Such a good idea.

That is an ingenious and kind way to enable people continue to feel — and be—purposeful and capable. Thanks for posting it Olychick.

    I'm bawling like a baby.

My Dad died from complications of Alzheimer's. It was a long, painful ending and as an only child it did a number on me that I'm still trying to recover from.

Oh, Ally I am so sorry. I know the pain of being an only child and dealing with the end of life of a parent. Tho not from Alzheimer’s; I can only imagine that journey. I wish peace on your soul..

My FIL is currently in a nursing home due to Parkinson's Disease and advancing dementia. Watching him slip away day by day and the effect it has on my MIL and my husband is devastating and heartbreaking. Oddly enough sometimes it is the good days that are cruelest, because they still give my MIL hope that it not dementia after all, and he'll come around. It is an awful disease. One solace is that he seems mostly content.... he is in a good place in his memories and often talks about good times and happy memories like they are current. It would be so much worse if he was scared or distraught, as we have seen with some of the other residents. I recently stumbled across this sadly beautiful song by Zach Bryan that I understand he wrote after hearing about a friend's grandfather. It reminds me of the story in The Notebook.

    Billy Stay

Billy won't you stay, we've been up all night
    Talking 'bout flowers from '65
That print on that dress that you always liked
We were young enough to go out and dance at night

We'd cross the street and you'd hold my hand
Same man now that you were back then
Young kids good for nothing but high hoping
    Broken, starving plastic ring
    Perfect for eloping

Years went by fast, you were so good to me
Our children have children, Billy, how could it be
But ninety years is nothing to some kids like us
So baby, stick around and tell a story just because

    Billy stay a while
Lately, you've been slipping in and out
    Billy stay a child
Tell me 'bout that girl you dreamed about
    Billy stay a while
Tell me of the lovers who once were
    And Billy stay a child
Tell me 'bout that girl and how you loved her

Billy don't forget, won't you keep on tryin'
I'll keep my ears open to keep from crying
You're more handsome now than you were back then
And I'm the same girl you fell for when we were kids

If love was enough then you'd stay forever
But I guess sometimes that the end is better
'Cause love turns to loss as the time goes by
You don't know your own name but you know mine

    Billy stay a while
Lately you've been slipping in and out
    Billy stay a child
Tell me 'bout that girl you dreamed about
    Billy stay a while
Tell me of the lovers who once were
    Billy stay a child
Tell me 'bout that girl and how you loved her

And you went back home in your sleep last night
And I heard you whisper, "I love you, goodbye"
    But maybe your Heaven's 1965
With my hair in your face on a long summer drive
To me you'll never be the times you forgot
But all of our good times and flowers the you bought

Oh so sweet and touching. A perfect ending with the tale of the water-carrier. I’m passing this along to my dear friend whose husband is in the beginning stages of dementia. He just turned 90 so has certainly led a full life, but we hate this for both of them already.

Ally, I am so sorry! May you eventually be at peace.

That was beautiful Olychick. Thank you for sharing it with us.

Hugs Ally. It is hard. In so many ways. Each person's journey is different as well. I hope your spirit returns to its happy state before long. Take your time, and remember to be nice to you, especially during the tender times.
