Exterior help!

last year

Exterior of house is crumbling off and needs to be replaced. Debating if we stick with Tudor style stripes or more modern siding option. Also not sure what colour scheme. Any advice? Thank you! Getting new windows but wanting to leave roof and eaves troughs since in good shape.

I would remove the faux timbers on the second story. I would repair or replace the stucco instead of installing siding. There is nothing wrong with the color you have currently. It goes with the roof, brick and stone. If you want a change, you could go darker, but I think that can end up looking oppressive. It's a different look in any case. You will have to be careful to match the tone of the brown roof. Don't get white or black windows. Most manufacturers sell brown or bronze windows.

Can you take a picture of the entire house with roof? This one with light colors with the brick & stone, then darker door, is my favorite update that keeps the character of the home.

WOW somebody messed with that house already the fake tudor trim and that stucco mess was a bad decision for sure. IMO was not a tudor house to begin and what style house do you like? IMO this house can take on many different looks so a bit of info from you will be a great.I do not think the stucco is the right finish, the stone is very busy and at least 2 kinds so what ever you decide IMO needs to be simple so I would do siding horizontal on thta top part for sure. Went to your idea books and the ideas are all over the lace so my advice is figure out the style you like then see what can be done to achieve that.

Here is one with the whole roof

@Allison Bahm …. now , aren’t you glad you asked? LOl… i would remove the timbers & re-stucco or re-side with whatever works best. Then, I would re-landscape, I think there’s a lot of potential there for a beautiful yard . Good luck!

A lot going on here. The upstairs facade doesn’t match the downstairs facade. The windows are mismatched. I would take off the busy two-tone & re- stucco. Match up the windows & the trim/house paint colors on upper & lower parts of the house.

You know this needs a lot of TLC

    Brick/stone needs to be washed

The roof checked to see if it's still good

You could simplify the pattern of the timbers on the 2nd story, but they do look rotted

I'd paint the trim brown to simplify the appearance of the home.

    Brown storm door

I'd keep the Tudor style because it makes the house a bit special.

Hi Beverly, what program did you use to change the photo? I’ve been trying to find something that can help me visualize colours and changes. Thanks!

Hi that house is not a Tudor style house no matter what the previous owners try to do to it. Absolutely upper stucco and faux Timbers need to be removed. The bottom stones also look faux to me and as if they are not original to the house, although I could be wrong. I would go with clapboards or shingles. I was looking at the house next to yours, but there is not enough visible to get a sense of it’s style. What do the houses in your neighborhood look like? BTW when was this house built, that could give you some clues.

Thanks! It was built in 1935 in Toronto and it’s included in a row of 4 houses that are all Tudor style although the other 3 have a peaked roof section. Here is my neighbours house

@ K Laurence seems right on target. This link on Tudor houses in Toronto seems to suggest your house is a version of Tudor that is in Toronto. https://www.leeanneweld.com/toronto-architecture-tudor/ This is her sketch with the article, so I do believe you have a type of Tudor.

So in looking at the link that Kat shared, this dies seem to be a particular Tudor style adopted in Toronto (It's funny because I was wondering if this was a Toronto home when it posted). I would follow the suggestions of cat and Beverly. I like the idea of simplifying the top but keeping it with the style of home in the neighborhood. Doesn't have to be brown. Can be the sage green and the photo Kat posted. You might want to play around with colors on your computer and see what you like best.

The ivy growing up the right side of the house under the overhang should be removed. Rip it all out, totally. It is very destructive to anything it grows on and it also allows vermin (rats) a way to climb up and get into the house.

    My version using paint.

This is all so interesting seeing the history of the house and some of the design ideas to try and keep a bit of the old style but less busy. I’m thinking of doing that but maybe updating the colour scheme to something more modern. I wonder if the taupes/creams would look good on the timbering etc.

  • last year

What type of new windows are you putting in? What finish color are they going to be?

  • last year

Oops forgot. In my opinion, taupes/creams would look really good with your stone, brick and roof. But if you’re anything like me you will need advice on what shades to use. I must of had 14 sample cans before I got a front door & trim color right. These people should be able to help you.

Re: windows we haven’t picked the colour yet… need help with that too. But thinking they will have grates (white on inside) to add some detail. We are getting rid of the storm windows that have the rust/brown thick trim

    Grill not grates

I’m guessing the white areas now are stucco and the Timbers are wood, and you are getting water intrusion where they meet? I was inclined to remove the timbering but seeing that it’s original I would try to retain it. Probably replace the stucco with smooth cement panel and replace the timbering with hardi as well. As to paint the current white with dark brown is far too much contrast. There are plenty of subtler ways to honor the half timbering, or even monochromatic. With brown roof and gutters you will need to stick to earth tones - taupes, olives.

  • last year

Whatever color you use for the timbers I would carry it down to the lower level windows similar to what Beverly did in the mock up. For the stucco (or cement panel) try to pull a color from the stone as opposed to anything too stark. Will help the two halves look less disjointed.
